Pencoed Railway Station
Pencoed railway station is a minor station in Pencoed, Bridgend county borough, south Wales. The station is located at street level at The Square in Pencoed, from . It is a stop on the South Wales Main Line, served by trains on the Maesteg Line, and occasionally by Swanline Cardiff to Swansea regional services, as well as the peak time Manchester to Carmarthen service. All trains are operated by Transport for Wales Rail. History The present station was one of two reopened between Cardiff and Bridgend by British Rail in September 1992 as part of the Maesteg Line reinstatement scheme, the previous station here having succumbed to the Beeching Axe in November 1964 (along with many other smaller stations on the Cardiff to Swansea main line). Pencoed ( cy, Pen-coed) is a urbanised community and town in the county borough of Bridgend, Wales. It straddles the M4 motorway north east of Bridgend and is situated on the Ewenny River. At the 2011 census it had a population of around 9,166. Early habitation The earliest evidence of habitation in the area is the nearby Ogof y Pebyll ("Tents Cave") or Ogof Coed-y-Mwstwr ("Hubbub Wood Cave")),(, Grid Ref: SS951807) which is a scheduled monument and appears to have been inhabited during Neolithic or Bronze Age periods. The British Rail Class 170 ''Turbostar'' is a British diesel multiple unit (DMU) passenger train built by Adtranz and later Bombardier Transportation at Derby Litchurch Lane Works.
