Peekskill City School District (PCSD) is the school district of Peekskill, New York. History It was headed by Superintendent Judith Johnson, the 2008 New York State School Superintendent of the Year, up until 2011. David Fine became superintendent in 2015. He resigned in 2017. The current superintendent is Dr. David Mauricio. Schools It consists of four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The elementary schools operated on a "neighborhood" basis until 1999. Beginning the 1995–1996 school year, sixth graders were moved from elementary schools to the middle school. Until the 1998–1999 school year, each student attended the school closest to his or her home, beginning in kindergarten and ending with graduation from fifth grade. Peekskill, New York
Peekskill is a city in northwestern Westchester County, New York, United States, from New York City. Established as a village in 1816, it was incorporated as a city in 1940. It lies on a bay along the east side of the Hudson River, across from Jones Point in Rockland County. The population was 25,431 at the 2020 US census, an increase over 23,583 during the 2010 census. It is the third largest municipality in northern Westchester County, after the towns of Cortlandt and Yorktown. The area was an early American industrial center, primarily for iron plow and stove products. Great Recession
The Great Recession was a period of marked general decline, i.e. a recession, observed in national economies globally that occurred from late 2007 into 2009. Peekskill High School
Peekskill High School, established in 1929, is located at 1072 Elm Street in Peekskill, New York, United States. It educates most of the district's ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders. The school's current principal is Dr. Jenna Ferris. Peekskill students prepare for the New York State Regents Exams in science, language, mathematics, history and English. In addition to the Regents curriculum, the high school also offers Advanced Placement courses, which prepare students to take the AP Exams offered by the College Board in early May. A new course at the school as of the 2007–2008 school year is the three-year Authentic Science Research program. Several college courses are also offered. The school replaced the Peekskill High School at 212 Ringgold Street (1929 to 1972). Prior to 1929, Drum Hill School served as the high school, and is now a senior living community. Peekskill Military Academy
Peekskill Military Academy was a military academy for young men and women, founded in 1833 as Peekskill Academy, located in Peekskill, New York, United States. Background The academy was built by a hanging tree where a British spy was executed in 1777; his bones were discovered and relocated during construction of a dormitory in the 1860s. In 1841 the academy decided to only admit boys. By 1857 it was known as Peekskill Military Academy. The school song was titled "The Big House on the Hill". The school motto was "Stand Firm As An Oak. Quit You Like Men." The academy closed in June 1968. The reason identified was a decline in enrollment and lack of endowment. Most buildings from Peekskill Military Academy were razed to make room for a new Peekskill High School building.
