Alfred Pearse
Alfred Pearse (20 May 1855 – 1933), also known as A Patriot, was an English artist, author, campaigner and inventor. Pearse, born at St Pancras, London, was a fourth generation artist and son of celebrated decorative artist Joseph Salter Pearse (1822–1896) and Loveday Colbron (1825–1895). He studied at West London School of Art and gained numerous prizes for drawing. As special artist and correspondent to The Sphere (newspaper), ''The Sphere'', he was assigned to the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York's 1901 tour of New Zealand. Pearse designed posters campaigning for women's suffrage. He drew a weekly cartoon for ''Votes for Women'' from 1909, and was also regularly published in ''The Illustrated London News'', ''Boy's Own Paper'' and ''Punch''. With Laurence Housman, he set up the Suffrage Atelier. Pearse produced various artworks, cartoons and propaganda related to British efforts in World War I. Patrick Pearse
Patrick Henry Pearse (also known as Pádraig or Pádraic Pearse; ga, Pádraig Anraí Mac Piarais; 10 November 1879 – 3 May 1916) was an Irish teacher, barrister, poet, writer, nationalist, republican political activist and revolutionary who was one of the leaders of the Easter Rising in 1916. Following his execution along with fifteen others, Pearse came to be seen by many as the embodiment of the rebellion. Early life and influences Pearse, his brother Willie, and his sisters Margaret and Mary Brigid were born at 27 Great Brunswick Street, Dublin, the street that is named after them today. Willie Pearse
William James Pearse ( ga, Uilliam Seamus Mac Piarais; 15 November 1881 – 4 May 1916) was an Irish republican executed for his part in the Easter Rising. He was a younger brother of Patrick Pearse, a leader of the rising. Background Willie Pearse was born in Dublin and throughout his life lived in the shadow of his brother to whom he was devoted and with whom he formed a particularly close relationship. Pearse inherited his father's artistic abilities and became a sculptor. He was educated at the Christian Brothers School, Westland Row. He studied at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin under Oliver Sheppard. He also studied art in Paris. While attending the Kensington School of Art in London he gained notice for several of his artworks. Some of his sculptures are to be found in Limerick Cathedral, the Cathedral of St. Eunan and St Columba, Letterkenny and several Dublin churches. Vyvyan Pearse
Gerald Vyvyan Pearse (7 September 1891 – 19 December 1956) was a South African first-class cricketer and British Army officer. Pearse initially played first-class cricket for Natal in South Africa, before moving to England to take up a Rhodes Scholarship at the University of Oxford. He served in the British Army during the First World War with the Royal Field Artillery, during which he was awarded the Military Cross. After the war he played first-class cricket in England for Oxford University, the Free Foresters and the Marylebone Cricket Club. He later served in the Second World War and was made an MBE at its conclusion. He was the youngest brother of the Test cricketer Charles Pearse. Colonel Thomas Dean Pearse (c. 1741/42 – 15 June 1789) was a British Army officer who served as a colonel in the Bengal Army's artillery. He took an interest in astronomy and conducted many surveys during his service in India. Biography Pearse was born about 1741 or 1742 to Royal Navy Captain Thomas Pearse of Reading and his wife Martha. After passing out from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, he was appointed second lieutenant of the Royal Artillery on 24 October 1761, and first lieutenant on 3 February 1766. In February 1768, he transferred to the East India Company's service. He was made major in the Bengal Army artillery on 2 September 1768 serving in Chunar, lieutenant-colonel on 30 October 1769, and colonel on 12 June 1779. Susan Beatrice Pearse
Susan Beatrice Pearse (19 January 1878 – 1980) was a British illustrator of children's books best known for the Ameliaranne series of books. Life She was born in Kennington in South London and educated at King Edward's School (Southwark), King Edward's School, Southwark. She married fellow artist Walter Ernest Webster in Fulham towards the end of 1919, but continued to use her maiden name professionally. To her friends, she was known as 'Trissy' Webster. She is best known for her work on the Ameliaranne series of children's books. She also created drawings for greeting cards and often included pictures of dolls in her work. Susan B Pearce Webster lived her later years in the village of Blewbury, Berkshire, about 50 miles west of London, a village popular with authors and artists including John Revel, Kenneth Grahame and Marguerite Steen. Samuel Herbert Pearse, F.R.C.I. (born November 20, 1865) was a pioneer Nigerian shipper and produce exporter of Sierra Leone Creole and Egba heritage. He established the first Hotel in Lagos in 1907. He was also a member and secretary of the Lagos branch of the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society. Samuel George Pearse, Victoria Cross, VC, Military Medal, MM (16 July 1897 – 29 August 1919) was an List of Australian Victoria Cross recipients, Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth forces. Serving in the First Australian Imperial Force, Australian Imperial Force during the First World War, he saw action during the final weeks of the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915 and later on the Western Front (World War I), Western Front from 1916 to 1918.
