Peace And Development Party
The Peace and Development Party (PDP, so, Xisbiga Nabadda Iyo Horumarka) was a political party in Somalia. It was established in April 2011 by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the President of Somalia from 2012 to 2017. PDP members unanimously elected him as the party's Chairman in April 2011, with a mandate to serve as leader for the next three years. The party's leadership also has ties with Al-Islah, Somalia's branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. In October 2019, the PDP joined the Forum for National Parties, an alliance of Somali political parties which have agreed to work together to resolve Somalia's political and security issues. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud ( so, Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud, ar, حسن شيخ محمود; born 29 November 1955) is a Somali politician who has served as the president of Somalia since May 2022. He is the founder and current chairman of the Union for Peace and Development Party. He was 2022 Somali presidential election, elected as President of the Federal Republic of Somalia on 15 May 2022, defeating the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed. He previously served in the same position as the 8th president of Somalia from 2012 to 2017. A civil and political rights activist, Hassan was previously a university professor and Dean (education), dean at SIMAD University, which he co-founded. This article lists political parties in Somalia. In 2017 an independent electoral commission was inaugurated with a mandate to oversee the process of registration of political parties in the country, according to Article 47 of the Federal Provisional Constitution which provides for an electoral system. The system guarantees participation of every individual who subscribes to a political party. NIEC has registered over 100 political parties, most of which still operate from outside the country for security reasons. In October 2019 six parties joined together to form the Forum for National Parties, an alliance founded by former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed which has come together to address the political and security issues faced by Somalia. The Forum for National Parties (Madasha Xisbiyada Qaran) is an alliance of political parties in Somalia founded in October 2019. The alliance includes Himilo Qaran party, led by former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, and Peace and Development Party led by incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Other key leaders joining the coalition include Ilays party leader Abdulkadir Osoble, former South West President Sharif Hassan and former defense minister Mohamed Abdi, the first interim president of Jubaland. The alliance has been formed ahead of the 2020 Somali elections, when for the first time since 1969 Somalia was set to hold one man one vote elections.
