Johnson was the mayor of Phoenix from 1990 to 1994. Johnson grew up in Sunnyslope, an urban poverty pocket inside of Phoenix. Sunnyslope was a poverty pocket designated a slum and blight area for federal funds. Johnson attended Sunnyslope grade school and graduated from Sunnyslope High School. Johnson took almost a decade to earn his undergraduate degree as he worked days and went to school at night. He majored in history at Arizona State University and received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. The Sunnyslope community is an established neighborhood within the borders of the city of Phoenix, Arizona. The geographic boundaries are 19th Avenue to the west, Cactus Road to the north, 16th Street to the east, and Northern Avenue to the south. Samuel Pearson Goddard III (born January 29, 1947) is an American attorney and politician. He served as the Mayor of Phoenix from 1984 to 1990, on the Central Arizona Water Conservation District from 2001 to 2003 and as the 24th Attorney General of Arizona from 2003 to 2011.
