Paul Campbell (first Baseman)
Paul McLaughlin Campbell (September 1, 1917 – June 22, 2006) was an American professional baseball player, manager, scout and front office executive. He appeared in the Major Leagues as a first baseman with the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers, then served as a scout and traveling secretary for the Cincinnati Reds. He spent 57 continuous years in professional baseball. Campbell was born in Paw Creek, North Carolina, the only son of Charles Davis Campbell and Fannie Cooper Campbell. He broke into professional baseball in 1936 and debuted in the Majors in 1941 with the Red Sox. From 1943 to 1945, Mr. Campbell served in the United States Army Air Forces in England and played on a team that toured the British air bases. A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes. Flexibility is needed because the first baseman receives throws from the other infielders, the catcher and the pitcher after they have fielded ground balls. 1946 World Series
The 1946 World Series was played in October 1946 between the St. Louis Cardinals (representing the National League) and the Boston Red Sox (representing the American League). This was the Red Sox's first appearance in a World Series since their championship of . In the eighth inning of Game 7, with the score 3–3, the Cardinals' Enos Slaughter opened the inning with a single but two batters failed to advance him. With two outs, Harry Walker walloped a hit over Johnny Pesky's head into left-center field. As Leon Culberson chased it down, Slaughter started his " mad dash". Louisville Colonels (minor League) Players
The Louisville Colonels were a Major League Baseball team that also played in the American Association (AA) throughout that league's ten-year existence from 1882 until 1891. They were known as the Louisville Eclipse from 1882 to 1884, and as the Louisville Colonels from 1885 to 1891; the latter name derived from the historic title of the Kentucky Colonel.
