Paul Barnes (musician)
Paul D. "Polo" Barnes (November 22, 1901 – April 3, 1981, New Orleans) was an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist. He was the brother of Emile Barnes and was a mainstay of the New Orleans jazz scene of the 1920s and 1930s. Career Barnes attended St. Paul Lutheran College and began playing alto saxophone in 1919. He and Lawrence Marrero formed the Original Diamond Band, later known as the Young Tuxedo Band. He was with Kid Rena in 1922, the Maple Leaf Orchestra in 1923, and Papa Celestin's Original Tuxedo Band later that year; Celestin's group recorded his tune "My Josephine", which became quite popular. He played with Chick Webb in 1927, and with King Oliver three times (1927, 1931, 1934–35). He toured with Jelly Roll Morton in 1928-29. In 1932 and 1933, Barnes led his own band. Paul Barnes is the founder and former senior minister of the evangelical church Grace Chapel in Douglas County, Colorado. He confessed to being homosexual to the church board, and his resignation was accepted on December 7, 2006. He started the church in his basement and watched it reach a membership of 2,100 in his 28 years of leadership. Paul Lance Barnes (born 16 November 1967) is an English former professional footballer who played as a striker in the Football League for Notts County, Stoke City, Chesterfield, York City, Birmingham City, Burnley, Huddersfield Town, Bury and Doncaster Rovers. Paul Barnes (born 1970, Harlow, England) is a graphic designer and typographer. He has designed several new typefaces. Career After an education at the University of Reading, in 1992 he emigrated to the United States to work with Roger Black. In 1995 he left Roger Black and began work as a freelance designer in London. He has worked with many large corporations, making logos for such well known companies as Givenchy, ABC television and the English bands New Order, Electronic and Joy Division. With Christian Schwartz he designed the very large Guardian Egyptian family typefaces for The Guardian newspaper and operates the digital type design company Commercial Type. In April 2007 he designed the logo for Kate Moss with Saville.
