Patriot Camps
The Patriot camps ( ka, პატრიოტული ბანაკი) are state-sponsored summer camps for the teenagers of Georgia (country), Georgia. The Patriot camps were initiated by the president of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili in 2005. Each year tens of thousands of young Georgians attend summer camps for ten days, with expenses paid by the Georgian government. Participation is voluntary. In 2007 seven patriot camps will operate. The declared aim of the project is to raise national pride in young Georgians and to counter social problems of the country. The participants are from poor backgrounds aged 15 to 20. Activities in the camps focus on sporting and cultural events. President Saakashvili, the initiator of the program, himself a former pioneer, rebutted any parallels to Soviet Union, Soviet Young Pioneer camps, saying that this is as different as it can get. A summer camp or sleepaway camp is a supervised program for children conducted during the summer months in some countries. Children and adolescents who attend summer camp are known as ''campers''. Patrinoti (transliteration of ka, პატრინოტი, a portmanteau of ka, პატრიოტი ''patriot'' and ka, ნოტი ''note'') is a music contest in Georgia of patriotic songs and military marches, organized by the United National Movement. In 2005 out of 800 contestants 7 were awarded, among which a notable Georgian rapper Lekseni. 2007 Georgian Demonstrations
In 2007, a series of anti-government protests took place across Georgia. The demonstrations peaked on 2 November 2007, when 40,000–50,000 rallied in downtown Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. People protested against the allegedly corrupt government of president Mikheil Saakashvili. Protests triggered by detention of Georgian politician Irakli Okruashvili on charges of extortion, money laundering, and abuse of office during his tenure as defense minister of the country were organized by the National Council, an ad hoc coalition of ten opposition parties, and financed by the media tycoon Badri Patarkatsishvili.
