Patrick Finucane (Irish Politician)
Patrick Finucane (5 December 1899 – 10 April 1984) was an Irish Clann na Talmhan politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Kerry North constituency from 1943 to 1969. Born on a family farm at Prohus, Moyvane, County Kerry, he was the eldest of nine children. In 1917 he joined the Irish Volunteers and took part in the Irish War of Independence. Following the split on the Anglo-Irish Treaty, he took the anti-treaty side. He married and had a farm at Urlee, Lisselton. He was involved in farming organisations and in 1942 was elected to Kerry County Council. He was chosen to contest the 1943 general election by the Kerry Farmers' Association. and was elected as a TD for the Kerry North constituency. He subsequently joined Clann na Talmhan, sitting on the opposition benches. He was re-elected at the 1944 and 1948 general elections. A Teachta Dála ( , ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). It is the equivalent of terms such as ''Member of Parliament'' (MP) or '' Member of Congress'' used in other countries. The official translation of the term is "Deputy to the Dáil", although a more literal translation is "Assembly Delegate". 1944 Irish General Election
The 1944 Irish general election was held on Tuesday, 30 May, having been called on 9 May by President Douglas Hyde on the advice of Taoiseach Éamon de Valera. The general election took place in 34 parliamentary constituencies for 138 seats in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (parliament). Fianna Fáil won an overall majority, and when the newly elected members of the 12th Dáil assembled on 9 June, de Valera was re-appointed as Taoiseach at the head of a majority government. Campaign The outgoing Fianna Fáil government was a minority government. Following a defeat for the second reading of its Transport Bill, Taoiseach Éamon de Valera called a snap election, just one year after the previous election, in hopes of getting an overall majority.
