Patrick Costello (Australian Politician)
Patrick Costello (18 March 1824 – 17 October 1896) was an Australian businessman and politician active in the Colony of Victoria. Costello was born in County Leitrim, Ireland. He arrived in Melbourne when he was 17, through an assisted migration scheme. Costello made his fortune as a builder and contractor during the gold rush, and built a large home in Carlton. He was elected to the Melbourne City Council in 1855. Costello ran for the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1859 and 1861, standing in the seat of North Melbourne and running on a liberal platform which included support for secular education and opposition to the Masters and Servants Acts. He was successful on his second attempt. Costello was sworn into the Legislative Assembly on 31 August 1861, but was expelled two months later on 1 November after being convicted of electoral fraud. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. Town Of North Melbourne
The Town of North Melbourne was a local government area in Victoria, Australia, centred on the suburb of North Melbourne. It was first proclaimed on 30 September 1859 as the Municipality of Hotham, reflecting the original name of the suburb of North Melbourne, separating what had been the Hotham Ward of the City of Melbourne as its own municipality. The original boundaries were Victoria Street, Elizabeth Street and Flemington Road. It became the Borough of Hotham on 14 October 1863 following statewide municipal reforms and was proclaimed a town on 18 December 1874, becoming the Town of Hotham. The council petitioned the state government to change the name to North Melbourne at this time, but were refused. Tim Costello
Timothy Ewen Costello AO (born 4 March 1955) is an Australian Baptist minister who was the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Advocate of World Vision Australia. Costello worked as a lawyer and served as mayor of St Kilda. He has authored a number of books on faith and life. A National Trust poll in 2014 elected him one of Australia's 100 national living treasures. Early life Costello was born in Melbourne, Victoria, where he grew up in the suburb of Blackburn and was educated at Carey Baptist Grammar School. He is a descendant of Irish immigrant Patrick Costello, who was expelled from the Parliament of Victoria in the 1860s for electoral fraud. Peter Howard Costello (born 14 August 1957) is an Australian businessman, lawyer and former politician who served as the treasurer of Australia in government of John Howard from 1996 to 2007. He is the longest-serving treasurer in Australia's history. Costello was a member of parliament (MP) of the Australian House of Representatives from 1990 to 2009, representing the Division of Higgins. He also served as the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party from 1994 to 2007. Personation (rather than ''im''personation) is a primarily-legal term, meaning 'to assume the identity of another person with intent to deceive'. It is often used for the kind of voter fraud where an individual votes in an election, whilst pretending to be a different elector. It is also used when charging a person who portrays themselves as a police officer. Personation appears as a crime in the Canadian Criminal Code with the meaning simply of impersonation.
