Patrick Atkinson (Jamaican Politician)
Patrick George Atkinson is a South African politician who has served as a Democratic Alliance Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Previously he served as a City of Johannesburg municipal councillor from 2019 to 2022 and as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Economic Development and as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa between 2014 and 2019. Parliamentary career Prior to the 7 May 2014 general election, Atkinson was ranked 70th on the Democratic Alliance's national list and 20th on its regional Gauteng list. At the election, Atkinson won a seat in the National Assembly. He was sworn in as a Member of Parliament on 21 May 2014. On 5 June 2014, the DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane appointed him as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Economic Development, deputising for Kobus Marais. The Gauteng Provincial Legislature is the legislature of the South African province of Gauteng. It is a unicameral body of 73 members elected every five years. The current legislature, the sixth, was elected on 8 May 2019 and has an African National Congress majority of 37 members. The legislature is housed in Johannesburg City Hall in central Johannesburg. The Gauteng Provincial Legislature, like the eight other provincial legislatures in South Africa, was created on 27 April 1994 by the Interim Constitution of South Africa, which dissolved the four original provinces (and their provincial councils) and created the nine current provinces. Kobus Marais is a South African politician, Member of Parliament with the Democratic Alliance, and the current Shadow Minister of Defence and Military Veterans. Education and family life Marais was born on 26 June 1959 as Sarel Jacobus Francois Marais in Worcester, Western Cape, where he lives with his wife and two children. He obtained a Bachelors of Economic and a Master of Business and Administration degree from Stellenbosch University. 2019 South African General Election
General elections were held in South Africa on 8 May 2019 to elect a new President, National Assembly and provincial legislatures in each province. These were the sixth elections held since the end of apartheid in 1994 and determined who would become the next President of South Africa. Incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa led the ruling African National Congress, with the party attempting to retain its majority status and secure Ramaphosa a full term in office as president; his predecessor, Jacob Zuma, resigned from office on 14 February 2018.
