The Pascagoula Metropolitan Statistical Area is a metropolitan area in the southeastern corner of Mississippi that covers two counties - Jackson and George. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 150,564. The area was significantly impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 155,603. Prior to the hurricane, the area had experienced steady population growth. It is also part of the larger Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula Combined Statistical Area. Gulf Park Estates is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located south of Ocean Springs in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. Merrill, Mississippi
Merrill is an unincorporated community in George County, Mississippi, United States. Prior to the creation of George County, Merrill was located in Greene County. Merrill is located on the former Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad and was once home to nine general stores, three turpentine distilleries, two sawmills, and a drugstore. A post office operated under the name Merrill from 1898 to 1960. The Merrill Bridge is the oldest still-intact bridge over the Pascagoula River. The bridge was built in 1928 and was the first bridge to cross the Pascagoula. It replaced a ferry that previously operated on the site. The bridge is now closed to traffic and is listed as a Mississippi Landmark. Bexley, Mississippi
Bexley is an unincorporated place in George County, Mississippi. History Prior to the creation of George County, Bexley was located in Greene County. The Diamond Lumber Company opened a sawmill in Bexley in 1901. The mill was capable of sawing of pine per day. The company built a shortline railway running south from Bexley. The mill closed in 1918. Bexley was a stop on the mainline of the Illinois Central Railroad. A post office operated under the name Bexley from 1900 to 1971. The Bexley School operated from 1913 to 1959, and was one of the first consolidated schools in Mississippi (consolidation allowed two or more rural schools to combine). In 2010, George County Sheriff Garry M. Welford was killed in Bexley while assisting in a high-speed chase.
