Parents (1989 Film)
''Parents'' is a 1989 American black comedy horror film directed by Bob Balaban and starring Randy Quaid, Mary Beth Hurt, Sandy Dennis and Bryan Madorsky. Set in a 1950s California suburb, the film centers on a 10-year old boy (Madorsky), who suspects that his parents (Quaid and Hurt) are not what they seem. It was Balaban’s debut as a feature film director. Released by Vestron Pictures on January 27, 1989, the film received a mixed response from critics and fared poorly commercially, but has since developed a cult following. Randy Quaid’s performance earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead. Bob Balaban
Robert Elmer Balaban (born August 16, 1945) is an American actor, author, comedian, director and producer. He was one of the producers nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture for ''Gosford Park'' (2001), in which he also appeared. Balaban is most known for his appearances in the Christopher Guest comedies ''Waiting for Guffman'' (1996), '' Best in Show'' (2000), ''A Mighty Wind'' (2003), and '' For Your Consideration'' (2006) and in the Wes Anderson films ''Moonrise Kingdom'' (2012), ''The Grand Budapest Hotel'' (2014), ''Isle of Dogs'' (2018) and ''The French Dispatch'' (2021). The Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead was an award presented annually at the Independent Spirit Awards to honor an actor who has delivered an outstanding Leading actor, lead performance in an independent film. It was first presented in 1985, with M. Emmet Walsh being the first recipient of the award for his role as Investigator Loren Visser in ''Blood Simple''. Open Matte
Open matte is a filming technique that involves matting out the top and bottom of the film frame in the movie projector (known as a ''soft matte'') for the widescreen theatrical release and then scanning the film without a matte (at Academy ratio) for a full screen home video release. Open matte can be used with non-anamorphic films presented in 2.20:1 or 2.39:1, but it isn't used as often, mainly because it adds too much additional headroom, depending upon how well the framing was protected or if the director chooses to create a certain visual aesthetic. Instead, those films will employ either pan and scan or reframing using either the well-protected areas or the areas of interest.
