''Paraperipatus ceramensis'' is a species of velvet worm in the family Peripatopsidae. This species is grey-green with rust speckles. Females of this species have 21 or 22 pairs of legs (usually 21) and range from 13 mm to 55 mm in length. The type locality is in Seram, Indonesia. Frederick Arthur Godfrey Muir
Frederick Arthur Godfrey Muir (24 April 1873 – 13 May 1931) was an English entomologist who worked in Africa and Hawaii. He wrote extensively describing many new species of insect and establishing the family Kinnaridae. He was also a pioneer of biological control. Muir was born in Clapham, London to Joseph Alexander and Annie Marie (Lempriere) Muir. He studied in private schools and worked for ten years in Africa with the Eastern Telegraph Company from 1886 to 1905. He took an interest in insects and was encouraged by David Sharp and joined the experimental station of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association at Honolulu in 1905 and worked extensively on insects, especially those that suck sap in the superfamily Fulgoroidea. John Kershaw (entomologist)
John Crampton Wilkinson Kershaw (1871 – 26 August 1959) was a British explorer, naturalist and entomologist who explored and collected in South China and Australia. He was among the first entomologists to successfully rear tachinid parasitoids in quantity for use in biological control. Kershaw was born in Boughton, Nottinghamshire, where his father George was a vicar. Like two of his brothers, Bertram and Sidney, he took an interest in entomology from a young age. He was influenced by David Sharp and Edward Poulton. In 1898 he went to Hong Kong and there he met amateur ornithologist Frederick William Styan and became interested in the birds of the Macao region. He helped Frederick A. G. Muir of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association in entomological studies between 1906 and 1907 to locate parasites of sugarcane pests. Onychophora (from grc, ονυχής, , "claws"; and , , "to carry"), commonly known as velvet worms (due to their velvety texture and somewhat wormlike appearance) or more ambiguously as peripatus (after the first described genus, '' Peripatus''), is a phylum of elongate, soft-bodied, many-legged panarthropods. In appearance they have variously been compared to worms with legs, caterpillars, and slugs. They prey upon other invertebrates, which they catch by ejecting an adhesive slime. Peripatopsidae
Peripatopsidae is one of the two living velvet worm families. Description The Peripatopsidae exhibit relatively many characteristics that are perceived as original or "primitive" with respect to the Peripatidae. The number of leg pairs in this family range from as few as 13 (in ''Ooperipatellus nanus'') to as many as 29 (in ''Paraperipatus papuensis''). Behind or between the last leg pair is the genital opening (gonopore). Both oviparous and ovoviviparous, as well as genuinely viviparous, species exist, although the Peripatopsidae essentially lack a placenta. Distribution The distribution of the Peripatopsidae is circumaustral; in particular, they inhabit Australasia, South Africa and Chile.
