Paralympic Cycling
Para-cycling (or Paracycling) is the sport of cycling adapted for cyclists who have various disabilities. It is governed by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The sport consists of seven different events which include road and track races. The world's elite para-cyclists compete at Track and Road Worlds Championships (since 1994), the Commonwealth Games, the Paralympic Games and the World Cup (since 2010). History Para-cycling originated in the 1980s, starting with visually impaired riders who competed on a tandem with a sighted partner. In New York 1984 it entered the Summer Paralympic Games, where it consisted of only road races for riders with cerebral palsy. Over the next four Paraolympic Games further events were added. Ursula Schwaller (London2012)
Ursula Schwaller (born 26 June 1976) is a Swiss para-cyclist, who won two bronze medals at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Career Ursula Schwaller was born on 26 June 1976. In 2002, she had an accident while mountain trekking. Her resulting spinal injury caused her to become paraplegic. She was already active in sports, but following the injury she decided to take up para-sports instead. For example, she took up cycling using a handcycle. Schwaller set herself the objective of competing at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China, as part of the Swiss team. She was chosen, and finished fourth in the women's road time trial H1–2. Schwaller was less successful in the road race, where she finished in ninth place. At the 2012 Summer Paralympics, she won the bronze medal in the women's road time trial H1–2 despite riding with a thumb injury restricting her in the second half of the race. Road cycling is the most widespread form of cycling in which cyclists ride on paved roadways. Racerunning
Frame running, previously known as RaceRunning, is an adaptive athletic discipline, primarily for people with severe coordination and balance impairments such as cerebral palsy. Athletes use a three-wheeled running frame, with a saddle, body support and most notably, no pedals. Athletes run over distances similar to other track and road running disciplines; 100, 200, 400, 800 meters as well as 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers, half and full marathons. Like running more generally, frame running can be competitive, recreational, or for health and fitness. Frame running was created in Denmark in 1991 by Paralympian Connie Hansen and Mansoor Siddiqi, a former CP2L backwards wheelchair foot pushing athlete and currently the international frame running coordinator. Handcycling
A handcycle is a type of human-powered land vehicle powered by the arms rather than the legs, as on a bicycle. Most handcycles are tricycle in form, with two coasting rear wheels and one steerable powered front wheel. Despite usually having three wheels, they are also known as ''handbikes''. Origin Stephan Farffler was a Nuremberg watchmaker of the seventeenth century whose invention of a manumotive carriage in 1655 is widely considered to have been the first self-propelled bicycle. Tandem Bicycle
A tandem bicycle or twin is a form of bicycle (occasionally a tricycle) designed to be ridden by more than one person. The term tandem refers to the seating arrangement (fore to aft, not side by side), not the number of riders. Patents related to tandem bicycles date from the mid 1880s. Tandems can reach higher speeds than the same riders on single bicycles, and tandem bicycle racing exists. As with bicycles for single riders, there are many variations that have been developed over the years. Cycling is one of the sports at the quadrennial Commonwealth Games competition. It has been a Commonwealth Games sport since the second edition of the event's precursor, the 1934 British Empire Games. It is an optional sport and may, or may not, be included in the sporting programme of each edition of the Games, but has appeared in every edition of the Games to date.
