''Pancho Barnes'' is a 1988 American made-for-television biographical film about the pioneering female aviator, starring Valerie Bertinelli, Ted Wass, James Stephens and Cynthia Harris. John Michael Hayes
John Michael Hayes (11 May 1919 – 19 November 2008) was an American screenwriter, who scripted four of Alfred Hitchcock's films in the 1950s. Early life Hayes was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Worcester, Massachusetts to John Michael Hayes Sr. and Ellen Mabel Hayes. Hayes Sr. was a tool and die maker but had performed as a song and dance man on the Keith-Albee-Orpheum, Keith-Orpheum vaudeville circuit earlier in life. Florence Lowe "Pancho" Barnes (July 22, 1901 – March 30, 1975) was a pioneer aviator and a founder of the first movie stunt pilots' union. In 1930, she broke Amelia Earhart's air speed record. Barnes raced in the Women's Air Derby and was a member of the Ninety-Nines. ''The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club'' is a 2009 American documentary film that chronicles the life of aviation pioneer Florence Lowe "Pancho" Barnes. Production ''The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club'' was made on a non-profit basis through the Orange County PBS station KOCE-TV. It was written and produced by Nick T. Spark and directed by University of Southern California professor Amanda Pope. Dydia DeLyser and Nathan May served as associate producers for the film. Happy Bottom Riding Club
The Happy Bottom Riding Club (1935–1953), was a dude ranch, restaurant, and hotel operated by aviator Florence "Pancho" Barnes near Edwards Air Force Base in the Antelope Valley of California's Mojave Desert. Barnes and her club were featured in Tom Wolfe's 1979 book, '' The Right Stuff'', and its 1983 film adaptation. Also known as the Rancho Oro Verde Fly-Inn Dude Ranch, the establishment was a favored hangout of test pilots and the Hollywood elite during the 1940s, boasting over 9,000 members worldwide at the height of its popularity. When the United States Air Force intended to buy the club via eminent domain in order to extend their runways, a long and contentious series of lawsuits ensued.
