Palestine At The 2004 Summer Olympics
Palestine competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. The Palestine Olympic Committee listed Sofia Sakorafa, a Greek-born former javelin world record holder who had recently obtained Palestinian citizenship, as part of its delegation. The International Olympic Committee, however, barred Sakorafa from competing, due to her failing to meet the qualifying standard. The Palestine Olympic Committee ( ar, اللجنة الأولمبية الفلسطينية) is the National Olympic Committee of the State of Palestine. The State of Palestine has been recognized as a member of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) since 1986, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1995. History In 1933 the Olympic Committee of Israel, Palestine National Olympic Committee was officially formed, and was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in May 1934, despite never competing. Although this committee represented Jews, Christians and Muslims living in Mandatory Palestine, its rules stated that they "represent[ed] the Jewish National Home." Rad Aweisat ( ar, رعد عويسات; born October 27, 1986) is a Palestinian swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. Aweisat qualified for the men's 100 m butterfly, as Palestine's youngest athlete (aged 17), at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The women's 800 metres at the 2004 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program were held at the Athens Olympic Stadium from August 20 to 23. The first round had split a full roster of runners into six heats with the first three gaining a direct qualification and then the next six fastest across all heats advancing to the semifinals. The top two runners in each of the three semifinal heats moved on directly to the final, and they were immediately joined by the next two fastest from any of the semifinals. The final started with a fast first 200 metres, but Kelly Holmes and Maria de Lurdes Mutola were last at this stage. As the pace slowed, Mutola and Holmes moved forward through the field.
