Palau At The 2012 Summer Olympics
The Oceanic island nation of Palau competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's fourth consecutive appearance at the Olympics. Five Palauan athletes were selected to the team, competing only in athletics, judo, swimming, and weightlifting; all of them had participated in their first Olympics. Sprinter Rodman Teltull, the youngest male athlete of the team, was the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Palau, however, has yet to win its first Olympic medal. Stevick Patris (born 17 January 1991 in Koror) is a Palauan weightlifter. He competed at the 2011 Pacific Games in Nouméa, New Caledonia in the men's -62kg weight category. He won the bronze medal lifting a total of 233 kg beating three other competitors, Ramoaka Brown, Tui Moce Tikodelaimatuku and Johnathon Jesse Yuw. Jennifer Anson (born March 5, 1977 in New York City, United States) is an American-Palaun judoka. At the 2012 Summer Olympics Jennifer Anson competed in the Women's 63 kg, but was quickly defeated in the initial elimination round of 32. Anson was on her back and out almost as soon as her first fight had started, overwhelmed by a far superior and younger Mongolian opponent, Munkhzaya Tsedevsuren. In only 46 seconds, the 26-year-old Mongolian pummeled and strangled Anson resulting in an Ippon, or technical knockout, and a perfect score of 110 to 0, the highest possible score in judo. The strangling technique used is called okuri eri jime. The bout has been described as a cameo Olympic appearance for Anson that ended in a flash. The International Judo Federation (IJF) was founded in July 1951. The IJF was originally composed of judo federations from Europe and Argentina. Countries from four continents were affiliated over the next ten years. Today the IJF has 200 National Federations on all continents.
