PS Hero
The ''Hero'' is a paddle steamer that was built at Echuca in 1874 by George Linklater. The working life of ''Hero'' first ended in 1957, but it was later restored c2000 as a first class luxury paddle steamer finely fitted-out for private charters. History The ''Hero'' traded on the Murrumbidgee River as a hawking vessel until the 1930s when sold to Arbuthnot Sawmills at Koondrook as a logging boat. The company also owned the PS Alexander Arbuthnot. Murray River Flag (Upper)
The Murray River Flag is flown from paddle steamers and other vessels in the Australian States of New South Wales, Victoria (Australia), Victoria and South Australia that ply the waters of the Murray-Darling river system. Little is known about the flag's early history but it may have originated as far back as 1850 when the formation of the Murray River League was announced. R. W. PV Pride Of The Murray
PV ''Pride of the Murray'', like many other Australian paddle wheelers, started out life as a timber logging barge. It was built at Echuca on the Murray River in 1924, and relaunched as a tourist vessel in 1977, also at Echuca. In 2022 the vessel was transported overland to Longreach, Queensland, for use as a tourist attraction on the Thompson River. History ''Pride of the Murray'' was built as the timber logging barge ''C24'', at Echuca in 1924. Constructed by C Felshaw for the Murray River Sawmills, ''C24'' took a team of twelve men between three and four months to complete. In 1956, ''C24'' was towed upstream by PS ''Oscar W'' for use during the construction of the new Barmah bridge. Following completion of the bridge, the barge was let go to drift downstream with the current (though still handled by two men) for five days to return to Echuca. Robinvale
Robinvale is a town on the south bank of the Murray River in north western Victoria, Australia. It is connected by a bridge to Euston on the other side of the river in New South Wales. At the , Robinvale had a population of 3,313, however a population study conducted by the Rural City of Swan Hill that was undertaken in 2019 identified Robinvale had an estimated population of between 7,000 in November and 8,800 in March each year. History The Robinvale region is home to at least five indigenous groups with traditional ownership belonging to people from the Latji Latji and Dadi Dadi people. The region, particularly Bumbang Island houses a large number of culturally significant sites and heritage items. Boundary Bend, Victoria
Boundary Bend is a small town in the state of Victoria, Australia. It is near the junction of the Murray River and Murrumbidgee River. It is located about 50 kilometres east along the Murray Valley Highway from the twin towns of Robinvale in Victoria and Euston in New South Wales, about 90 km north of Swan Hill. At the , Boundary Bend and the surrounding area had a population of 132. The access to the junction of the two rivers is down a track off the highway. It was at this point that Captain Charles Sturt and his party of explorers first sighted the Murray River in 1830. They had travelled down the Murrumbidgee, and continued downstream along the Murray in their whaleboat. Boundary Bend Post Office opened on 6 April 1923. For many years, there were two Paddle Steamer hulls located just underwater on the southern bank of the Murray River. These were the '' Canally'' and the ''Hero''. Origins The newspaper was founded at Echuca on 1 July 1863, with its first editor as Robert Ross Haverfield (1819–1889) and joint owners James Joseph Casey (1831–1913) and Angus Mackay (1824–1886) - the latter also being one of the proprietors of the Bendigo Advertiser. Haverfield was a drover, grazier, gold miner, explorer and journalist. He was born on 26 February 1819 at Bideford, North Devon, England as the son of a Royal Navy Commander R.T.
