PKP Class SM48
SM48 is the name for class of Soviet diesel locomotives operating in Poland for PKP. The original designation was ТЭМ2 (TEM2), and was the Soviet-built version of the ALCO RSD-1. History The SM48 was originally put into service on the eastern Polish railways, where Russian broad gauge railways were still in use. It turned out that the locomotive fitted well within the structure gauge on standard gauge lines. Introduction Since 1976, PKP have bought 130 SM48 locomotives. There are also locos in service with other Polish operators: PCC Rail, PTKiGK Zabrze, Kopalnia Piasku Kotlarnia. Modernizations Since 2010, several locomotives underwent modernization to Newag 15D/16D standard. (PKP Cargo classes them as ST48.) In 2017, Pesa offered their version of modernization, designated 19D. In 2021, offered their version of modernization, designated 20D. Co′Co′ Locomotives
Co-Co is the wheel arrangement for diesel or electric locomotives with two six-wheeled bogies with all axles powered, with a separate traction motor per axle. The equivalent UIC classification (Europe) for this arrangement is Co′Co′, or C-C for AAR (North America). Use Co-Cos are most suited to freight work as the extra wheels give them good traction. They are also popular because the greater number of axles results in a lower axle load to the track. History The first mainline diesel-electric locomotives were of Bo-Bo arrangement. As they grew in power and weight, from 1937 the EMD E-units used an A1A-A1A layout with six axles to reduce axle load, but only four of them were powered. PKP classification system (Polish locomotive designation) is a system of assigning letters and numbers to series and individual locomotives used by the PKP - Polish national railroad operator. The system was introduced for the steam stock by the Ministry of Railways on 3 November 1922, shortly after Poland regained her independence (1918) when the Polish railroads inherited a variety of German, Austrian and Russian steam locomotives, each with its own type convention. It was put into use in 1923–1926 years. The name 'Pesa' derives from the initials PS which stand for ''Pojazdy Szynowe,'' 'railway vehicles' in Polish. Newag 15D/16D
Newag 15D/16D is a cargo locomotive (type 15D - PKP ST48 series) or broad gauge (type 16D) diesel locomotive rebuilt by Newag in Nowy Sącz in Poland, which is a deeply modernised SM48 (Soviet TEM2) locomotive. Modernisation As a result of the modernisation the Soviet-produced internal combustion engine was replaced with a US drive unit that meets the emissions standards for UIC IIIa. The power output has been raised from 0.88 MW (1200 hp) to 1.55 MW (2100 hp), which makes the new version suitable for shunting. The driver cabin has been changed based on Newag 6Dg and, combined with lower height of prime mover compartment, visibility from the cab has been improved. A structure gauge, also called the minimum clearance outline, is a diagram or physical structure that sets limits to the extent that bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure can encroach on rail vehicles. It specifies the height and width of platforms, tunnels and bridges, and the width of the doors that allow access to a warehouse from a rail siding. Specifications may include the minimum distance from rail vehicles to railway platforms, buildings, electrical equipment boxes, signal equipment, third rails or supports for overhead lines. A related but separate gauge is the loading gauge: a diagram or physical structure that defines the maximum height and width dimensions in railway vehicles and their loads. ALCO RSD-1
The ALCO RSD-1 was a diesel-electric locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). This model was a road switcher type rated at and rode on three-axle trucks, having a C-C wheel arrangement. It was often used in much the same manner as its four-axle counterpart, the ALCO RS-1, though the six-motor design allowed better tractive effort at lower speeds, as well as a lower weight-per-axle. It was developed to meet the need to supply the Soviet Union over the Trans-Iranian Railway starting in mid 1943.
