PKC (Papendrecht)
PKC (Papendrechtse Korfbal Club) is a Dutch korfball club located in Papendrecht, Netherlands. The club was founded on 2 February 1935 and they play their home games in the PKC-Hal. The team plays in white shirts and green shorts / skirts. The club has around 1000 members, which makes it the biggest korfball club in the world. History In 1971 PKC first joined the highest Dutch competition outdoors, the Hoofdklasse. Although they finished at 9th place in their first season in the top, they quickly moved towards being one of the top teams in the Netherlands. Their first national title came in season 1976-1977, when they won the Dutch outdoor title. Their first success in the indoor-competition came in season 1979-1980, where they played their first outdoor final in club history. In this final they lost to Deetos. Korfball
Korfball ( nl, korfbal) is a ball sport, with similarities to netball and basketball. It is played by two teams of eight players with four female players and four male players in each team. The objective is to throw a ball into a netless basket that is mounted on a high pole. The sport was invented by Dutch school teacher Nico Broekhuysen in 1902. In the Netherlands there are approximately 500 clubs and more than 90,000 people playing korfball. The sport is also played in Belgium and Taiwan, and in nearly 70 other countries. History In 1902 Nico Broekhuysen, a Dutch school teacher from Amsterdam, was sent to Nääs, a town in Sweden, to follow an educational course about teaching gymnastics to children. This is where he was introduced to the Swedish game "ringboll". In ringboll one could score points by throwing the ball through a ring that was attached to a 3 m pole. Papendrecht () is a town and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, at the crossing of the River Beneden Merwede and the Noord River. The municipality had a population of in and covers an area of of which is water. Although Papendrecht is first mentioned in documents dating back to 1105, it remained a small settlement until the 1950s. Wim Scholtmeijer
Wim Scholtmeijer (1982) is a former Dutch Korfball player and former Dutch National Team Coach. Since 2020 has been the headcoach of PKC. As a player Scholtmeijer won four Dutch national championships and two European championships. As the Dutch national team headcoach he won six gold medals. Scholtmeijer father, Jantinus Scholtmeijer, was also a korfball player and coached the Polish and Australian national team. Player career Scholmeijer began playing korfball at the age of 5 at ASKO (Assen). In 2000, at the age of 18 he started university in Groningen. He then joined Nic. as this was a successful team in Groningen. Here he played for two seasons. In 2002 he joined Fortuna to team up with Joost Preuninger and Barry Schep. In the same off-season Fortuna also acquired new headcoach Hans Heemskerk and the team revitalized. In his first season with Fortuna, he won the Dutch national indoor championship. Korfbal League
The Korfbal League is the highest echelon of korfball in the Netherlands. The league was founded in 2005 as the new highest level in Dutch korfball. Before that the top level was split in two divisions. Since the start of the competition the format has been the same. The winner of the Korfbal League qualifies for the IKF Europa Korfball Cup while the number 10 relegated to the Hoofdklasse (korfball). The number 9 will compete with the loser of the Hoofdklasse final in a play-off for a position in the Korfbal League.
