Oyster Bay, Long Island
Oyster Bay is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) on the North Shore of Long Island in Nassau County in the state of New York, United States. The hamlet is also the site of a station on the Oyster Bay Branch of the Long Island Rail Road and the eastern termination point of that branch of the railroad. The community is within the Town of Oyster Bay, New York, a town which contains 18 villages and 18 hamlets. The hamlet's area was considerably larger before several of its parts incorporated as separate villages. At least six of the 36 villages and hamlets of the Town of Oyster Bay have shores on Oyster Bay Harbor and its inlets, and many of these were previously considered part of the hamlet of Oyster Bay; three of those are now known as Mill Neck, Bayville & Centre Island. Oyster Bay Station
Oyster Bay is the terminus on the Oyster Bay Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. The station is located off Shore Avenue between Maxwell and Larabee Avenues. It is a sheltered concrete elevated platform that stands in the shadows of the original station, which was accessible from the ends of Maxwell, Audrey, and Hamilton Avenues. Both stations exist along the south side of Roosevelt Park. The original Oyster Bay station opened on June 24, 1889 and remodeled in 1902. At one point there were plans to extend the line east towards the Port Jefferson Branch. There was also a large pier built to facilitate the loading of passenger cars onto a short-lived ferry to Wilson's Point in South Norwalk, Connecticut that is now owned by the Flowers Oyster Company. Laurel Hollow
Laurel Hollow is a village in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 1,952 at the 2010 census. According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Laurel Hollow was the eighth wealthiest town in America. History The settlement began ''circa'' 1653 with purchase of land from the local natives. The village was incorporated in 1926 as "Lauralton," but the name was changed to "Laurel Hollow" in 1935 to avoid postal confusion with Laurelton in Queens. Muttontown is a village located within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 3,497 at the 2010 census. History During colonial times, the area was used to raise sheep for wool and meat. The village was incorporated in 1931. The name of the village stems from its former use as pasturage for sheep. History The village is named for the brook which once ran along its main road, Wolver Hollow. Cove Neck
Cove Neck is a village located within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York. The population was 286 at the 2010 census. History Cove Neck incorporated as a village in 1927. Cove Neck is the site of the home of President Theodore Roosevelt. His estate, Sagamore Hill, is now a museum operated by the National Park Service. It attracts many visitors annually. On January 25, 1990, Avianca Flight 52, a Boeing 707, ran out of fuel before crashing into a hillside in Cove Neck. 73 out of the 158 passengers and crew onboard died in the accident. Mill Neck
Mill Neck is a village in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. History Mill Neck incorporated as a village in 1925. Many Gold Coast-era estates were constructed in Mill Neck during the Gold Coast era. Mill Neck Village Hall, which also houses the village's branch of the United States Post Office, is located in the former station house of the Mill Neck Long Island Rail Road station.
