Owen (band)
Owen is a solo project of Mike Kinsella, and part of the Chicago, Illinois indie rock scene. Kinsella is one of the dominant and influential figures in the Chicago indie scene, having also led the band American Football, and played in the bands Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs and Owls, and most recently Their / They're / There. Owen is known for its soft melodies, complex acoustics, combining lead acoustics with keyboard and other guitars, plaintive vocals and drums. It can be seen as a natural progression for Kinsella, from the progressive and experimental severity of Joan of Arc via the more melodic-progressive American Football. Career Owen's debut, ''Owen'' was a stark departure from previous Mike Kinsella projects. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". ''No Good for No One Now'' is the second studio album by Owen released on November 19, 2002. The album was recorded in Mike Kinsella's old bedroom at his mom's house. The cover art is a painting by Charlot Byj. "The Ghost of What Should've Been" was posted on the label's website on November 15, ahead of the album's release. On November 20, the album was made available for streaming via an e-card. In January and February 2003, Owen appeared on the Polyvinyl Winter Tour alongside Rainer Maria and Mates of State. Polyvinyl Record Co. is an American independent record label headquartered in Champaign, Illinois. The label also has satellite offices in New York, Austin, and the Bay Area. Polyvinyl has put out over 400 releases to date.
