Ovidiu Lipan
Ovidiu Lipan 'Țăndărică' (born January 31,Cristea, Violeta.", Jurnalul Național, January 31, 2007. 1953 in Iași) is a Romanian drummer. He played between 1966 and 1975 with the Romanian rock band Roșu și Negru. In 1975 he joined Transsylvania Phoenix. In 1977 he settled in Germany, but after 1990 he moved back to Romania. Now he has solo projects and also plays with Pasărea Rock. His 2007 album ''Iskender'', a collaboration with Stelu Enache and Gheorghe Zamfir, featured reinterpretations of traditional Macedonian songs.Ciobanu, Luminita.'Iskander' și triada de aur", Jurnalul Național, August 29, 2007. The arrangements feature Greek, Roma, Slavic, and Celtic touches, among others, in such a manner designed to reflect Romania's multiculturalism. Iași
Iași ( , , ; also known by other alternative names), also referred to mostly historically as Jassy ( , ), is the second largest city in Romania and the seat of Iași County. Electrecord
Electrecord is a Romanian record label which was founded in 1932. It was subsequently transformed into the national recording company following the socialist doctrine of centralization and was the only record label in Communist Romania. History Communist times To avoid disc importing from Western Europe and the U.S., Electrecord was often demanded to release copies of some of the discs released abroad (just as recording companies in U.S.S.R. were doing themselves). Even today it is the subject of many anecdotes complaining about the bad quality of Romanian discs; a comparison between an import and a local copy would be the most eloquent proof. Electrecord had to balance the government's demands with those of listeners and musicians. Roton (label)
Roton Music is an independent Romanian record label established in 1994. The company has hundreds of employees, having offices in Bucharest, Iași, Cluj and Timișoara. In 2011, Roton Music entered into a licensing deal with Warner Music Group for some of its most popular artists and their catalogue. In October 2015, Warner Music and Roton extended their distribution deal to include Latin America, until 2020. Transsylvania Phoenix
Transsylvania Phoenix (also known as Phoenix in Romania) is a Romanian rock band formed in 1962 in Timișoara by guitarists Nicu Covaci and Kamocsa Béla. Guitarist Claudiu Rotaru, vocalist Florin "Moni" Bordeianu and drummer Ioan "Pilu" Ștefanovici completed the early lineup. The group became famous in Romania in the 1970s when it started fusing their 1960s rock and roll sound with traditional folk music, thus pioneering the " ethno rock" subgenre. After gaining popularity in Romania during the so-called British invasion in the mid-60s, the group changed its style to integrate Romanian folklore elements after vocalist Florin "Moni" Bordeianu emigrated to the United States. Gheorghe Zamfir
Gheorghe Zamfir (; born April 6, 1941) is a Romanian nai (pan flute) musician. Zamfir is known for playing an expanded version of normally 20-pipe nai, with 22, 25, 28 or even 30 pipes, to increase its range, and obtaining as many as eight overtones (additional to the fundamental tone) from each pipe by changing his embouchure. He is known as "The Master of the Pan Flute". Career Zamfir came to the public eye when he was approached by Swiss ethnomusicologist Marcel Cellier, who extensively researched Romanian folk music in the 1960s. The composer Vladimir Cosma brought Zamfir with his pan flute to Western European countries for the first time in 1972 as the soloist in Cosma's original music for the movie ''Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire''. The movie received several awards, including the ''Top Foreign Film'' from the National Board of Review in 1973. Pasărea Rock
Pasărea Rock (English: "The Rock Bird") is a Romanian rock supergroup formed in February 2014, in Bucharest, Romania by three former members of the legendary band Transsylvania Phoenix: Mircea Baniciu (lead vocals), Josef Kappl (bass), and Ovidiu Lipan (drums). The first line-up included another Transsylvania Phoenix member — Cristi Gram on lead guitar — along with Vlady Cnejevici on keyboards and Teo Boar on guitar. Later, they were replaced by Sorin Voinea (keyboards) and Nicu Patoi (lead guitar). The band's sound is a fusion between modern rock and traditional folk music, along with symphonic elements. Most of the new songs are composed by Josef Kappl; the lyrics are written mainly by Florin Dumitrescu. The setlist of Pasărea Rock also includes a few songs borrowed from Transsylvania Phoenix repertory and from Mircea Baniciu's solo career. Latin Rock
Latin rock is a term to describe a subgenre blending traditional sounds and elements of Latin American and Hispanic Caribbean folk with rock music. However, it is widely used in the English-language media to refer any kind of rock music featuring Spanish or Portuguese vocals. This has led to controversy about the scope of the terminology.
