Overton High School (currently known as Watkins Overton High School) is a secondary school for the Creative and Performing Arts located in Memphis, Tennessee, Memphis, Tennessee. The school, which serves grades 9 through 12, is a part of the Shelby County Schools (Tennessee), Shelby County Schools district. It was a Memphis City Schools, Memphis City School when it was built in 1959. It became Shelby County School, when Memphis surrender their charter back in 2014. The School was named in honor of Memphis mayor S. Watkins Overton. Athletics Overton's sports programs include: *Boys sports: Basketball, Baseball, Bowling, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, and Track. *Girls sports: Basketball, volleyball, Bowling, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Golf, Pom Pom, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, and Track. Wendy Moten (born November 22, 1964) is an American jazz singer from Tennessee. Born in Memphis and based in Nashville, Moten has had a successful career in music, including several major-label solo records, some international hit songs, and a second career as a touring musician. At age 56, she entered an American national talent competition, ''The Voice,'' where she finished as the runner-up. Saliva is an American rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1996. Saliva released their self-titled debut album in 1997 through Rockingchair Records, a label owned and operated by Mark Yoshida. Carl John Neumann (September 11, 1950 – April 23, 2019), nicknamed "Johnny Reb", was an American professional basketball player and coach. At 6'6" and 200 pounds, he played at the shooting guard and small forward positions. High school and college Following a standout career at Overton High School in Memphis, Neumann took his game to the University of Mississippi, where he played from 1969 to 1971. During his sophomore season, he drew comparisons to Pete Maravich, after averaging an NCAA-high of 40.1 points per game.
