Overstrand Railway Station
Overstrand railway station was a station in North Norfolk on the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Railway, serving the settlement of Overstrand. It opened on 3 August 1906 and was much used in the summer months by holidaymakers. The station was host to a LNER camping coach Camping coaches were holiday accommodation offered by many railway companies in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland from the 1930s. The coaches were old passenger vehicles no longer suitable for use in trains, which were converted to ... in 1938 and 1939. Two coaches were also positioned here by Eastern Region of British Railways in 1952. The station closed when this part of the line closed to passengers on 7 April 1953. Overstrand is a village (population 1,030) on the north coast of Norfolk in England, two miles east of Cromer. It was once a modest fishing station, with all or part of the fishing station being known as Beck Hythe. In the latter part of the 19th century it was catapulted into prominence, and became known as “the village of millionaires”. History The village's name means 'ridge shore', or perhaps 'narrow shore' to contrast with nearby Sidestrand. The London journalist and travel writer Clement Scott came to Overstrand in 1883, christened the area ‘’Poppyland’’, and wrote about the church tower on the cliff edge and its “Garden of Sleep”. While in Overstrand he stayed at the Mill House with miller Alfred Jermy and his daughter Louie, who became “the Maid of the Mill” in his articles about ‘’Poppyland’’. Norfolk And Suffolk Joint Railway
The Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Railway (NSJR) was a British joint railway company. The NSJR was owned by the Great Eastern Railway (GER) and the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway (MGNJ) and consisted of two distinct sections: a line between North Walsham and Cromer via Mundesley, and a coastal section running from Gorleston to Lowestoft. Neither has survived apart from a stretch just south of Cromer which forms part of today's Bittern Line. Cromer Links Halt (located at ) was a railway station on the outskirts of Cromer. It was on the now disused Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Railway line between Roughton Road Junction and Overstrand station. It opened on 9 July 1923, only to close thirty years later on 7 April 1953. History Opened as part of an attempt to encourage holiday traffic on the line, the halt primarily served golfers at the nearby Royal Cromer Golf Club.
