Overseas Telecommunications Commission
The Overseas Telecommunications Commission (OTC) was established by Australia in August 1946. It inherited facilities and resources from Amalgamated Wireless Australasia Limited (AWA) and Cable & Wireless, and was charged with responsibility for all international telecommunications services into, through and out of Australia. In effect, all overseas telecommunications was nationalized. Australia was adopting a Commonwealth-wide policy that had been adopted at the Commonwealth conference in 1945. The main goal was to end the artificial routing of traffic to cable or wireless depending on private financial profits. On 1 February 1992 it was merged with Australia's domestic telecommunications carrier, the Australian Telecommunications Corporation Limited ("Telecom Australia") to create the Australian and Overseas Telecommunications Corporation Limited (AOTC). A state-owned enterprise (SOE) is a government entity which is established or nationalised by the ''national government'' or ''provincial government'' by an executive order or an act of legislation in order to earn profit for the government, control monopoly of the private sector entities, provide products and services to citizens at a lower price and for the achievement of overall financial goals & developmental objectives in a particular country. James Joseph Malone
James Joseph Malone MC (born 1883) was an Australian engineer prominent in the fields of telegraphy, wireless, broadcasting and communications. During the 1920s and 1930s he was Controller of Wireless with the then Postmaster-General's Department. He was later head of the Overseas Telecommunications Commission in the 1940s. Early and family life James Joseph Malone was born in Lismore in 1883 and raised in the nearby small village of Gundurimba. His parents were Peter Malone and Eliza Malone nee Clancy. The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) traces to the British Empire's Pacific Cable Board in 1901, though in its current form, was created by international treaty, the ''Commonwealth Telegraphs Agreement'' between Commonwealth Nations signed in London on 11 May 1948. The CTO connects government and non-government entities to enhance cooperation in information and communication technology (ICT). Commonwealth Pacific Cable System
COMPAC, the Commonwealth Pacific Cable System, was an undersea telephone cable system connecting Canada with New Zealand and Australia. It was completed by closing the last gap in Honolulu Harbor, Hawaii, at 6:25 a.m. B.S.T. on October 10, 1963. Public service of the cable commenced early in December 1963. History COMPAC was developed as a complementary system to CANTAT, the system linking Canada to the United Kingdom, which had begun operating in December 1961. COMPAC was designed to extend west towards Commonwealth nations in the Pacific, linking Vancouver to Auckland, New Zealand and Sydney, Australia, via Honolulu and Suva in Fiji. Giles Chippindall
Sir Giles Tatlock Chippindall (21 May 189320 December 1969) was a senior Australian public servant. He was Secretary of the Department of Supply and Shipping between 1945 and 1946 and Director-General of the Postmaster-General's Department between 1949 and 1958. Life and career Giles Chippindall was born in Carlton, Melbourne on 21 May 1893. He was educated at state schools in Victoria and Prahran College. Chippindall joined the Australian Public Service in 1908 as a telegraph messenger in the Postmaster-General's Department. During World War II, he served in a multitude of roles to progress the war-effort, including as Secretary of the Department of Supply and Shipping between 1945 and 1946.
