Oversands School
Oversands School (formerly Witherslack Hall School) is an independent special school with specialist SEN status situated in the village of Witherslack near Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, England. It was opened in 1973 as a residential and day school for boys aged 11–19 with special educational needs, including complex learning, communication, behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. The school has now been renamed to Oversands School and is a coeducational school for pupils aged 8 to 19. Witherslack Hall The school's central building, Witherslack Hall, was built in 1874 by Lancaster architects Paley and Austin and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. GWR 6959 Class
The Great Western Railway (GWR) 6959 or Modified Hall Class is a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotive. They were a development by Frederick Hawksworth of Charles Collett's earlier Hall Class named after English and Welsh country houses. Background Although the GWR had been at the forefront of British locomotive development between 1900 and 1930, the 1930s saw a degree of complacency at Swindon reflected in the fact that many designs and production methods had not kept pace with developments elsewhere. This was especially true with the useful GWR 4900 Class, the design of which largely originated in the 1900s and had not fundamentally changed since the mid-1920s. Paley and Austin were the surnames of two architects working from a practice in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, between 1868 and 1886. The practice had been founded in 1836 by Edmund Sharpe. Witherslack is a former civil parish, now in the parish of Witherslack, Meathop and Ulpha, in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, England. It contained 15 listed buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England. 6990 ''Witherslack Hall'' is a steam locomotive. It was built at Swindon by British Railways to a Great Western Railway design in 1948. It took part in the 1948 Locomotive Trials, on 24th and 25 June 1948, running on the Great Central Main Line The Great Central Main Line (GCML), also known as the London Extension of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR), is a former railway line in the United Kingdom. The line was opened in 1899 and built by the Great Central Railw ... from Marylebone. Preservation It was withdrawn in January 1966.
