Overlook, Portland, Oregon
Overlook is a neighborhood in the North section of Portland, Oregon on the east shore of the Willamette River. It borders University Park and Arbor Lodge on the north, Humboldt and Boise on the east, Eliot on the southeast, and Northwest Industrial and the Northwest District across the Willamette on the west. Features The Overlook Park station, the North Prescott Street station, and the North Killingsworth Street station on the MAX Yellow Line provide light rail service to the neighborhood. Overlook House (1928) serves as a community center. The Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, next to Patton Park, features arts education, exhibits and theater. The neighborhood includes Swan Island, originally an island in the Willamette. In 1899, Richard McCrary, James Connor, and Hi Straight set up a moonshine still on Swan Island. North Killingsworth Street Station
North Killingsworth Street is a light rail station on the MAX Yellow Line in Portland, Oregon. It is the fifth stop northbound on the Interstate MAX extension. The station is located in the median of Interstate Avenue near the intersection of N. Killingsworth Street. This station has staggered side platforms which sit on either side of the cross street, because the route runs around this station on Interstate Avenue in the median. Kaiser Shipyards
The Kaiser Shipyards were seven major shipbuilding yards located on the West Coast of the United States, United States west coast during World War II. Kaiser ranked 20th among U.S. corporations in the value of wartime production contracts. The shipyards were owned by the Kaiser Shipbuilding Company, a creation of American industrialist Henry J. Kaiser (1882–1967), who established the shipbuilding company around 1939 in order to help meet the construction goals set by the United States Maritime Commission for merchant shipping. Four of the Kaiser Shipyards were located in Richmond, California, and were called the Richmond Shipyards. Swan Island Municipal Airport
The Swan Island Municipal Airport was a joint civil-military airport that was operational on Swan Island in Portland, Oregon. Though it officially opened in 1927, the United States Postal Service had been using the airfield for a year. After the Portland–Columbia Super Airport was completed in the late 1930s, Swan Island Municipal Airport had little use since its runways were too small for newer aircraft and the low altitude made takeoffs and landings difficult. The airport was operational for nearly two decades, but due in part to the advances in aviation, it became obsolete soon after its construction. Swan Island (Oregon)
Swan Island is located on the Willamette River about downriver from downtown Portland, Oregon, United States. Although presently connected to the Willamette's east bank, it existed as a river island under natural conditions. Swan Island and a nearby bar posed an obstacle to river traffic during the 19th and early 20th centuries, with vessels being restricted to a narrow channel on the island's east side. Proposals on how to improve navigation around the island included widening one of its channels or removing the island completely. Swan Island was acquired by the Port of Portland in 1921. The Port undertook dredging to expand the channel on the island's west side, using some of the dredged material to connect the island to the Willamette's east bank. Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center
The Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center (IFCC) is a community-based arts center located in North Portland, Oregon, United States. Description and history The IFCC was founded in 1982 by Portland's first African-American elected official, Commissioner Charles Jordan. The IFCC is located in a 1910-built former fire station at 5340 North Interstate Avenue and now contains a 99-seat theater, an art gallery, and space for rehearsal or classes. The center's mission statement states that the IFCC, "is committed to creating an environment in which people of every ethnic/cultural background come together as artists and audience to explore, preserve and celebrate their diversity." MAX Yellow Line
The MAX Yellow Line is a light rail service in Portland, Oregon, United States, operated by TriMet as part of the MAX Light Rail system. It connects North Portland to Portland City Center and Portland State University (PSU) with 17 stops from Expo Center station to PSU South/Southwest 6th and College station. The line travels from Portland Expo Center in the north, south to the Rose Quarter through a light rail segment along the median of Interstate Avenue.
