Cornelis Ouwehand
Cornelis Ouwehand (1920–1996) was a Dutch anthropologist and a scholar of Japanese folklore. He is considered the founder of Japanese Studies in Switzerland. Career Cornelis Ouwehand was born in Leiden on 10 November 1920. He began his studies in 1938, and at the University of Leiden he completed the training course for the Indonesian Civil Service. He studied also Japanese, Chinese, and Cultural Anthropology. In 1968, he took up the Japanese Chair in the Ostasiatisches Seminar at the University of Zürich, a position which Ouwehand held until his retirement in 1986. He died in Heiloo, the Netherlands, on 5 September 1996. Works In 1964, Cornelis Ouwehand published his Doctor of Letters thesis entitled ''Namazu-e and their Themes: an interpretative approach to some aspects of Japanese folk religion'', a detailed, structuralist study of catfish images ('' namazu-e''). Ouwehands Dierenpark is a zoo in Rhenen, in the Dutch province of Utrecht. The zoo is located on the Laarschenberg, a "mountain" that makes up the south-eastern tip of the great Utrecht Hill Ridge. History Chicken farm The zoo's founder, Cor Ouwehand, had moved from Rotterdam to Rhenen to start a cigar factory, but changed his mind and started a chicken farm on the Grebbeberg in 1919, where he held a number of other animals as well, including raccoons, peacocks, and pheasants, quickly drawing public interest. 1930s During the Great Depression of the 1930s the chicken farm lost much of its business, though people kept coming to look at the animals, leading Ouwehand to turn his farm into a zoo. Esther Ouwehand (born 10 June 1976) is a Dutch politician and former marketing manager serving as leader of the Party for the Animals ( nl, Partij voor de Dieren, PvdD) and its parliamentary group in the House of Representatives since 2019.
