Out Of The Shadows (unfinished Film)
''Out of the Shadows'' was an unfinished 1931 feature film from A. R. Harwood. He made it after a number of years of working in distribution with the intention of producing Australia's first talking motion picture. The script was by J. Summers, "a Victorian who has had experience in Hollywood". Production The movie was a "society romance" shot in Melbourne using a sound-on-disc recording system. During filming, John Barnes (Australian politician), Senator John Barnes, then leader of the Senate, paid a visit to the St Kilda Studio where it was being shot. Independent Films announced plans to make four more movies. However the only set of wax discs buckled in a heat wave before the film was completed and it was never released. The honour of making the first Australian "talkie" went to F.W. Thring's ''Diggers (1931 film), Diggers'' (1931). John Barnes (Australian Politician)
John Barnes (17 July 1868 – 31 January 1938) was a union official and Australian federal politician representing the Labor Party. Early life Barnes was born at Hamilton, South Australia, the son of John Thomas Barnes, a drover who had emigrated from Somerset, England, and his wife, Mary, née Comerford, from County Clare, Ireland. Barnes was educated at a local primary school but left to obtain work as a farm labourer, shearer, miner and general bush worker; his father had died when the boy was six. ''Diggers'' is a 1931 Australian comedy film produced and directed by F. W. Thring starring popular stage comedian Pat Hanna. It was the first feature film from both men. The movie is based on Hanna's stage show, and is concerned with the adventures of Australian soldiers during World War I. Plot summary Two Australian 'cobbers', Chic and Joe, attend a reunion 12 years after World War I and reminisce about their exploits together in France. They recall three incidents in particular. Firstly, the time they were in hospital and ingeniously feigned an illness to stay away from active service and the front line. ''Spur of the Moment'' is a 1931 Australian film directed by A. R. Harwood. It was one of the first Australian talking movies. Plot A wealthy socialite, Claire Rutherford (Beatrice Touzeau), visits her former lover, Tony Iredale (James Alexander), one night. The next day Tony is arrested for the murder of a bookmaker the night before. In order to protect Claire's reputation, Tony remains silent. However a Scotland Yard detective in Melbourne on holiday (William Green) manages to trap the killer. Production Harwood had attempted to make Australia's first talking movie, ''Out of the Shadows'' in 1931 but been unable to complete it. However he managed to secure backing from a Melbourne businessman to fund two low-budget films, this and '' Isle of Intrigue'' (1931) made in an old factory at 61 Stanley St West Melbourne which had been converted into a sound studio. Plot The pearling schooners of a trading firm are being robbed by a mysterious pirate. The son of the owner of the firm (James Alexander) goes to the South Pacific island of Avita to investigate and uncover the pirate's identity, vindicating a man who has been unjustly accused. He also has a romance.
