Our Lady Help Of Christians Church, Portico
Our Lady Help of Christians Church is a Roman Catholic Parish church in the Portico area of Prescot, Merseyside. It was founded in 1790 by the Society of Jesus. History The Jesuits were present in the area from 1716 and lived in a house on Scoles Lane. After the building of a Catholic church in the area was permitted, George Marsh a local architect was contracted to design the new church. In 1790, a small presbytery and chapel was built for the local Catholics in the area. The chapel was built as an extension to the back of the presbytery. As there was no other Catholic church in the area, when it was built, if the local Catholics wanted to attend Mass, they had to come to the church. This lasted until 1856, when Our Lady Immaculate and St Joseph Church was built in the centre of the town. Prescot is a town and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley in Merseyside, England. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, it lies about to the east of Liverpool city centre. At the 2001 Census, the civil parish population was 11,184 (5,265 males, 5,919 females). The population of the larger Prescot East and West wards at the 2011 census totalled 14,139. Our Lady Immaculate and St Joseph Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Prescot, Merseyside. It was built in 1856-57 by the Society of Jesus, and is now in the Knowsley deanery of the Archdiocese of Liverpool. It is a Grade II listed building, designed by Joseph Aloysius Hansom, and is next to the Church of St Mary on Vicarage Place in the centre of Prescot.
