Hope International was an independent organization, operated by members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It published ''Our Firm Foundation'' magazine and ran camp meetings focused on conservative Adventist messages, originally based on Eatonville, WA, then Knoxville, IL. The magazine has ceased and the website is inactive. A commercial website claiming Hope International's legacy sells “natural” health supplements and advice out of Marshall, NC. In its heyday, Hope International was criticized by the official Adventist church for being disruptive. Independent Ministries Of The Seventh-day Adventist Church
The Seventh-day Adventist Church has a number of supporting, parachurch, independent, self-supporting and other such organizations that work adjunct or in association with the official church. One author estimated their number at over 800 and are mostly supportive of the church, although differing ministries may be critical of church actions. Supporting Supporting ministries are those that exist to support the church's ministry. The Seventh-day Adventist church recognizes the contribution made by these organizations as being such that the main church is unable to contribute to. Eatonville, Washington
Eatonville is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. It is south of Tacoma. The population was 2,845 at the 2020 census. The town motto is "Better Together". History For centuries, Nisqually people roamed the rivers and streams of the Eatonville area. Leschi, one of the main leaders of Nisqually was born in this area in 1808. In 1889, Indian Henry was one of the Nisqually who guided the town's Euro-American founder, Thomas C. Van Eaton, from Mashell Prairie to the present site of Eatonville. Legend has it that upon arrival Henry declared, "This is a good place. Not much snow." Area white settlers and the accompanying Nisqually were in need of goods, which "T.C." provided at his trading post. Supplies were carried by his stage from Spanaway over a rough trail through dense forest. In 1891, the settlers built the town's first school, which is still in use. Historic Adventism is an informal designation for conservative individuals and organizations affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church who seek to preserve certain traditional beliefs and practices of the church. They feel that the church leadership has shifted or departed from key doctrinal "pillars" ever since the middle of the 20th century. Specifically, they point to the publication in 1957 of a book entitled ''Seventh-day Adventists Answer Questions on Doctrine''; which they feel undermines historic Adventist theology in favor of theology more compatible with evangelicalism. Historic Adventism has been erroneously applied by some to any Adventists that adhere to the teachings of the church as reflected in the church's fundamental beliefs such as the Sabbath or the Spirit of Prophecy. Alden Thompson
Alden Lloyd Thompson is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian theologian, author, and seminar presenter. He is also a professor of biblical studies at Walla Walla University in Washington, United States. Biography He graduated from Walla Walla College in 1965 with a BA. The same year he married Wanda Hoffman. Thompson graduated from Andrews University with an MA in 1966 and a BD in 1967. After serving as a pastor in southeastern California from 1967 to 1970, he became a faculty member of Walla Walla University in 1970. From 1972 to 1974 he attended the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He was awarded with a doctorate in Old Testament and Judaic Studies in 1975, and his dissertation was published in 1977 by Scholars Press. In 1980 and 1981, he taught at Marienhoehe Seminary in Darmstadt, Germany. ''Seventh-day Adventists Answer Questions on Doctrine'' (generally known by the shortened title ''Questions on Doctrine'', abbreviated ''QOD'') is a book published by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1957 to help explain Adventism to conservative Protestants and Evangelicals. The book generated greater acceptance of the Adventist church within the evangelical community, where it had previously been widely regarded as a cult.
