Oudehaske ( fry, Aldehaske) is a village in De Fryske Marren in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1980 in 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1315 as Hasca. Haske is probably a type of grass. Oude (old) has been added to distinguish from Nijehaske. Oudehaske is a road village which developed on the Heerenveen to Joure main road. In the late 19th century, the former peat excavation areas were ''poldered''. In 1840, it was home to 585 people. The Protestant Church was built in 1906. Oudehaske started to grow in the 1960s. Before 2014, Oudehaske was part of the Skarsterlân municipality and before 1984 it was part of Haskerland. Nijehaske
Nijehaske is a village in De Fryske Marren municipality, west of Heerenveen in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 55 in 2017. In 1934, most of Nijehaske was transferred to Heerenveen and has become a neighbourhood. History The village was first mentioned in 1496 as Nya Hascha, and has Nije (new) to distinguish from Oudehaske. Haske is probably a type of grass. Nijehaske is a northern settlement of Oudehaske, and was a 16th-century peat excavation project. The Dutch Reformed Church was built in 1775, but has been transferred to Heerenveen. Joure
Joure (; West Frisian: ''De Jouwer'') is a town in the north of the Netherlands. It is the administrative center of De Fryske Marren, Friesland. With 13,090 inhabitants, it is also the most populous town in the municipality. Residents of Joure are called ''Jousters''; they are also commonly referred to as ''Jouster Keallepoaten''. The Frisian ''keallepoat'' ( calf's leg) refers to a baked offering, which early Jousters made to a water spirit, offering gratitude for bestowing so much water on their lands. The product consists of two elongated pastries that are baked next to and against each other and therefore resemble calf legs. They are made from rye flour, honey and various herbs. De Fryske Marren ( nl, De Friese Meren) is a municipality of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It was established 1 January 2014 and consists of the former municipalities of Gaasterlân-Sleat, Lemsterland, Skarsterlân and parts of Boarnsterhim, all four of which were dissolved on the same day. The municipality is located in the province of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands, and has a population of and a combined area of . Skarsterlân
Skarsterlân (; nl, Scharsterland ) is a former municipality in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. The municipality was created 1 January 1984 by merging the municipalities of Doniawerstal and Haskerland, the part of Utingeradeel consisting of the villages Akmarijp and Terkaple and the village Nieuwebrug that used to belong to Heerenveen. City hall was located in Joure. On 1 January 2014 it merged with the municipalities of Lemsterland and Gaasterlân-Sleat to form the new municipality De Fryske Marren. At first, the Dutch name Scharsterland was chosen, but as of 1 March 1985, the West Frisian name Skarsterlân was adopted and the Dutch name became obsolete. Hans Monderman
Hans Monderman (19 November 1945 – 7 January 2008) was a Dutch road traffic engineer and innovator. He was recognised for radically challenging the criteria used to evaluate engineering solutions for street design. His work compelled transportation planners and highway engineers to look afresh at the way people and technology relate to each other. His design approach is the concept of "shared space", an urban design approach that seeks to minimise demarcations between vehicle traffic and pedestrians, often by removing features such as kerbs, road surface markings, traffic signs, and regulations. A polder () is a low-lying tract of land that forms an artificial hydrological entity, enclosed by embankments known as dikes. Peat (), also known as turf (), is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation or organic matter. It is unique to natural areas called peatlands, bogs, mires, moors, or muskegs. Heerenveen
Heerenveen (, fry, It Hearrenfean ) is a town and municipality in the province of Friesland (Fryslân), in the Northern Netherlands. In 2021, the town had a population of 29,790 (1 January) while the municipality had a population 50,859 (1 July). History The town was established in 1551 by three lords as a location for the purpose of digging peat which was used for fuel, hence the name (''heer'' is "lord", ''veen'' is "peat").
