Otto Fries
Otto Hugo Fries (October 28, 1887 – September 15, 1938) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 120 films between 1920 and 1938. Biography Fries was born in St. Louis, Missouri and died in 1938 in Los Angeles, California at age 50. He was the father of National Football League player Sherwood Fries. Fries became a dapper-looking supporting comic with a varied background in medicine shows and vaudeville. He easily transitioned to film in the early 1910s. By 1915, he was with the Keystone Cops and entered a lifelong friendship with Stan Laurel, which led to appearances in that star comedian's early films for Bronco Billy Anderson. Not surprisingly, Fries later landed at Hal Roach Studios, where he supported not only Laurel & Hardy and Charley Chase but also such lesser stars as Max Davidson and James Finlayson. Sound proved no hindrance and Fries would appear in many of Roach's German-language talkies, as well as characters in many of the Our Gang shorts. Oft ... The First Seven Years
''The First Seven Years'' is a 1930 ''Our Gang'' short comedy film directed by Robert F. McGowan. It was the 96th (eighth talking) ''Our Gang'' short that was released. Plot Jackie is in love with Mary Ann, but she is not interested in any boy. Speck also is in love with Mary Ann. Mary Ann, after beating up Jackie (who got aggressive after seeking advice from Kennedy the Cop), decides to play along. She suggests that Jackie and Speck fight in a duel. Jackie tries to chicken out but winds up fighting Speck. They both use real swords that damaged a tire and the radiator leaked from an old car, and cut up tons of laundry on the clothes lines. The rest of the gang roots for Jackie. In the end, they drop their swords and fight with their fists. Jackie wins and Speck's father comes out and holds Jackie down and has Speck hit Jackie until Jackie's elderly grandmother steps in and knocks Speck and his dad out. The gang then cheers her on. ''Railroadin is an ''Our Gang'' short comedy film directed by Robert F. McGowan. Produced by Hal Roach and released to theaters by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, it was the 88th release in the ''Our Gang'' series. Plot The gang is playing around the railroad station, and Joe and Chubby's father, an engineer, lectures against the kids playing in such a dangerous area. True to his word, after Joe and Chubby's father leaves, a crazy man starts a train with most of the kids on it, save for Farina who is nearly run over several times. Once Farina manages to climb aboard himself, the kids attempt to stop the runaway locomotive, but have no luck until the engine crashes into a grocery truck. As it turns out, however, the entire incident is revealed to be a dream Farina had as Joe and Chubby's father lectured the kids about rail-yard safety. ''From Soup to Nuts'' is a silent short subject directed by E. Livingston Kennedy starring comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. It was released on March 24, 1928, by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Plot Stan and Ollie are hired as waiters at an upper class dinner party, with Ollie taking charge before entering the property . ''The Second Hundred Years'' (a.k.a. ''The Second 100 Years'') is a 1927 American silent comedy short film starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy prior to their official billing as the duo Laurel and Hardy. The team appeared in a total of 107 films between 1921 and 1951. Plot Stan and Ollie play two convicts who share a cell. They dig a tunnel to escape from prison. After making a detour to avoid a burst underground water pipe, they emerge through the floor of the warden's office and are quickly sent back to the cell block after a short chase. Not long afterward, Stan and Ollie cleverly disguise themselves as painters and casually walk out through the prison's front gate during a meal break carrying paint cans and brushes. They are watched by a suspicious policeman, however. To keep the ruse going, they indiscriminately paint everything they see—including a parked car and its engine.
