Jonas Otter
Jonas (Jean) Otter ( Kristianstad, Sweden, October 1707 – Paris, September 1748) was a Swedish traveler in the Ottoman and Persian Empires, known for his book ''Voyage en Turquie et en Perse, avec une Relation des Expeditions de Tahmas-Kouli-Khan'' (1748), based on his ten years in the Middle East. Otter studied languages, physics, and theology at Lund University under Andreas Rydelius, the Lutheran bishop of Lund, but interrupted his studies and left for Stockholm. In 1728, he converted to Catholicism, and left for Rouen, where he studied at the seminary until 1731, and learned English, Spanish, and Italian. He then left for Paris and worked at the Post Office. In January 1734, the Count of Maurepas sent him to Constantinople, where he stayed with the French Minister, Villeneuve, to study Arabic and Turkish. William Otter
William Otter (23 October 1768 – 20 August 1840) was the first Principal of King's College, London, who later served as Bishop of Chichester. Early life William Otter was born at Cuckney, Nottinghamshire on 23 October 1768, the son of Dorothy (née Wright) Otter (d. 1772) and the Rev. Edward Otter. He was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he was later made a fellow. Career He was appointed Principal of the newly established King's College, London, in 1831, and held the post until 1836 when he was appointed Bishop of Chichester. Otter established a small college to train schoolmasters in 1840, which was rebuilt in his memory in 1849 as Bishop Otter College, now the main Bishop Otter Campus of the University of Chichester. William Bruère Otter (28 May 1805 – 25 June 1876) was an Anglican cleric who was the Archdeacon of Lewes from 1855 until his death in 1876. Early life Otter was born on 28 May 1805 as the eldest son of The Right Reverend William Otter, Bishop of Chicester and his wife, Nancy Sadleir (née Bruère) Otter. Among his siblings were Sophia Otter (wife of the Rev. Henry Malthus, a son of Thomas Robert Malthus), Caroline Charlotte Otter (wife of John Romilly, 1st Baron Romilly), Maria Otter (wife of Sir William Milbourne James, Lord Justice of Appeal), and Amelia Harriet Otter (wife of Edward Strutt, 1st Baron Belper). Henry Charles Otter
Henry Charles Otter (1807 – 26 March 1876) was a Royal Navy officer and hydrographic surveyor, noted for his work in charting Scotland in the mid-19th century. He was active in surveying in the Baltic Sea during the war with Russia (1853-6) and in supporting the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable in 1858. Biography Henry Otter was born in Derbyshire in 1807. He joined the Royal Navy in January 1822, and passed his examination in 1828. In 1832, as lieutenant, he was appointed assistant to Lieutenant Michael Slater in surveying the north-east coast of England. The survey then moved on to Scotland, where Slater died, in February 1842, falling from Holborn Head, a headland near Scrabster, very likely by suicide. Otter then took charge of the survey of Scotland, which occupied him for most of the next twenty years, and resulted in the publication of over 40 Admiralty charts. Francis Otter (1831 – 29 May 1895) was an English Liberal politician. Otter was the son of Francis Otter of Ranby Hall, Wragby, and his wife Elizabeth Younger. He was educated at Gainsborough, Rugby School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1867. He became a J.P. for Lincolnshire. In the 1885 general election, Otter was elected Member of Parliament for Louth but did not stand again at the 1886 general election. Fredrik Wilhelm von Otter (11 April 1833 – 9 March 1910) was a Swedish '' friherre'', naval officer and politician, most notably serving as Prime Minister of Sweden from 1900 to 1902. Life and work Otter was born on the Fimmersta estate (Töreboda Municipality) in Västergötland and belonged to the wealthy and aristocratic von Otter family. He entered the Royal Swedish Navy as second lieutenant at the age of 17, but remained without promotion for a long time. Meanwhile, he served in the British Royal Navy from 1857 to 1861, participating in campaigns against pirates in the South China Sea, and took part in one of Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld's North Pole expeditions in 1868, as commander of the expedition ship ''Sofia''. William Dillon Otter
General Sir William Dillon Otter (December 3, 1843 – May 6, 1929) was a professional Canadian soldier who became the first Canadian-born Chief of the General Staff, the head of the Canadian Militia. Military career Otter was born near Clinton, Canada West. His parents were Anna Louisa, née de la Hooke (1824–1907) and Alfred William Otter (1815–1866), both English immigrants who married in Ontario on 15 September 1842. He began his military career in the Non-Permanent Active Militia in Toronto in 1864. Captain William Otter was Adjutant of the Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto in 1866. He first saw combat with them at the Battle of Ridgeway during the Fenian Raids. He joined the Permanent Force as an infantry officer when Canada established its own professional infantry unit in 1883. Anthony Otter
Anthony Otter (8 September 18969 March 1986) was an Anglican bishop who served as the sixth Bishop of Grantham (a suffragan bishop of the Diocese of Lincoln), from 1949 to 1965. Son of Robert and Marianne, Otter was educated at Repton and Trinity College, Cambridge (he gained his Bachelor of Arts in 1920 and proceeded Cambridge Master of Arts in 1925). After wartime service with the RNVR, he completed his degree and joined the Cambridge Mission to Delhi. Upon return, he trained for the ministry at Westcott House, Cambridge and was ordained a deacon by Arthur Winnington-Ingram, Bishop of London, at St Paul's Cathedral on 20 December 1925 and a priest by William Perrin, Bishop of Willesden, at St Saviour's Hampstead on 19 December 1926. Gerstein was an official at the "Institute of Hygiene" of the Waffen-SS and was on his way back from the Nazi concentration camp Treblinka extermination camp, Treblinka. Clement Leroy "Butch" Otter (born May 3, 1942) is an American businessman and politician who served as the 32nd governor of Idaho from 2007 to 2019. A member of the Republican Party, he was elected in 2006, and reelected in 2010, and 2014.
