The Ottawa, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of three counties in north central Illinois, anchored by the city of Ottawa. Peru (until 2020) and Streator (until 2013) are former primary cities. As of the 2010 census, the μSA had a population of 154,908. An estimate by the Census Bureau, as of July 1, 2012, placed the population at 153,182, a decrease of 1.11%, but still making it the fourth-largest micropolitan statistical area in the United States. Cherry, Illinois
Cherry is a village in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. The population was 435 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Ottawa Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is located northwest of LaSalle-Peru, just a few miles north of Interstate 80, and is about east of the Quad Cities. Cherry was the site of the Cherry Mine Disaster, which killed 259 coal miners in November 1909. This was the third most deadly mine disaster in U.S. history (as of 2005). History The St. Paul Coal Company sank a shaft at the Cherry Mine in 1905. The mine supplied coal for Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad locomotives, and was named for the first mine superintendent, James Cherry. Buda, Illinois
Buda is a village in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. The population was 482 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Ottawa Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The village was named after Buda, now a part of Budapest, in Hungary. Buda was chosen in honor of the hometown of exiled Hungarian politician Louis Kossuth. Buda was established in 1854 to serve the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. It displaced French Grove, Illinois which had been the post office in the area before the establishment of Buda. Judge Jesse Emmerson and W. H. Bloom opened the first and second stores respectively in Buda. In 1955 Dr. Holoton became of the first doctor in the community. An industrialist named George Chalender founded the Buda Engine Co. in Buda Illinois in 1910. The company relocated to Harvey, Illinois before being acquired by Allis-Chalmers in 1953. Wyanet, Illinois
Wyanet is a village in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. The population was 886 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Ottawa Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Wyanet's history dates back to 1821; it was officially plated in 1854 and incorporated in 1857. The community has had several names since its beginning. In 1821 the settlement was first called "Center". Named by Bulbona an Indian trader. In 1837 the Village officially started to sprout its roots due to the area known as "Pond Creek". Named for the Creek at the South edge of town where Ellis Mercer built a saw mill and Amos Leonard built the first flour mill. The first railroad, the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific was built here in 1853. At this time the name was changed to "Kingston" in honor of the land donors Henry and Mary King. Wenona is a city in Marshall and LaSalle counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 1,056 at the 2010 census, down from 1,065 in 2000. The Marshall County portion of Wenona is part of the Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the small portion that lies in LaSalle County is part of the Ottawa Micropolitan Statistical Area. Oglesby is a city in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,712 at the 2020 census, down from 3,791 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Oglesby was a center for mining coal, limestone, and silica, located near the confluence of the Illinois River and the north-flowing Vermilion River. Oglesby grew from an amalgamation of several mining villages, such as Kenosha, Portland, and Black Hollow. It was originally called Portland, due to the cement mined and manufactured in the area that was similar to Portland Cement from England. History Lovell Kimball arrived at the area along the Illinois River known as the Grand Rapids in 1833 from Watertown, New York. Ladd, Illinois
Ladd is a village in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,236 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Ottawa Micropolitan Statistical Area. Ladd is most known for Rip's Tavern (which serves about 1,200 orders of fried chicken on a busy night), and for a Vietnam War tank located in the center of its park. History The settlement was originally named Osgood after the manager of the Whitebreast Fuel Company. The Whitebreast Fuel Company, based in Ottumwa, Iowa was the major coal supplier for the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad. They set up the town in 1888. Ladd was incorporated on June 7, 1890, and was founded by George D. Ladd, a resident of Peru, Illinois. Ladd was originally named Laddville. The Ladd mine went bankrupt in 1901 and was purchased by the Illinois Third Vein Coal Company, owned by Samuel Dalzell of Spring Valley.
