Other Voices (Canadian TV Series)
''Other Voices'' is a Canadian current affairs television series which aired on CBC Television from 1964 to 1965. Premise Don Francks hosted this series which sought to feature groups who did not usually receive significant television coverage such as First Nations people living on reserve, youth in the British Mods and Rockers subcultures, and homosexuals ("Every Tenth Man"). The series also contained dramatic, musical or satirical sketches. The series also featured people such as author Wyndham Lewis, composer Charles Mingus, academic Marshall McLuhan, filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, painter Frederick Varley and musician Joe Hill. Don Francks
Don Harvey Francks (February 28, 1932 – April 3, 2016), also known by his stage name Iron Buffalo, was a Canadian actor, musician and singer. Career Don Harvey Francks was born on February 28, 1932, and was adopted shortly after his birth. His mother worked at a music store and his father was an electrician. As a child, he performed on Vancouver radio doing imitations of singers. After dropping out of high school at age 15, he worked in several jobs. In 1955, he won a recurring role on the CBC-TV program '' Burns Chuckwagon from the Stampede Corral''. After guest appearances on television shows during the late 1950s, he received his first lead role in the 1959–60 CBC-TV program '' R.C.M.P.'', playing Constable Bill Mitchell. Leni Riefenstahl
Helene Bertha Amalie "Leni" Riefenstahl (; 22 August 1902 – 8 September 2003) was a German film director, photographer and actress known for her role in producing Nazi propaganda. A talented swimmer and an artist, Riefenstahl also became interested in dancing during her childhood, taking lessons and performing across Europe. After seeing a promotional poster for the 1924 film ''Mountain of Destiny'', she was inspired to move into acting and between 1925 and 1929 starred in five successful motion pictures. Riefenstahl became one of the few women in Germany to direct a film during the Weimar Period when, in 1932, she decided to try directing with her own film, ''Das Blaue Licht'' ("The Blue Light"). Queen's University at Kingston, commonly known as Queen's University or simply Queen's, is a public research university in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Queen's holds more than of land throughout Ontario and owns Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, England. Queen's is organized into eight faculties and schools. The Church of Scotland established Queen's College in October 1841 via a royal charter from Queen Victoria. The University of Toronto Press is a Canadian university press founded in 1901. Although it was founded in 1901, the press did not actually publish any books until 1911. The press originally printed only examination books and the university calendar. Its first scholarly book was a work by a classics professor at University College, Toronto. Premise Most episodes of the program featured documentaries from various producers on various topics, with the notable exception of the fictional treatment in "The Open Grave" which was broadcast during Easter 1964. Scheduling This hour-long program was broadcast on alternate Sundays at 10:00 p.m. from 13 October 1963 to 30 August 1964. Frederick Varley
Frederick Horsman Varley (January 2, 1881 – September 8, 1969) was a member of the Canadian Group of Seven. Career Early life Varley was born in Sheffield, England, in 1881, the son of Lucy (Barstow) and Samuel James Smith Varley the 7th. He studied art in Sheffield and attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp (1900-1902), Belgium, while he worked on the docks. Marshall McLuhan
Herbert Marshall McLuhan (July 21, 1911 – December 31, 1980) was a Canadian philosopher whose work is among the cornerstones of the study of media theory. He studied at the University of Manitoba and the University of Cambridge. He began his teaching career as a professor of English at several universities in the United States and Canada before moving to the University of Toronto in 1946, where he remained for the rest of his life. Percy Wyndham Lewis (18 November 1882 – 7 March 1957) was a British writer, painter and critic. He was a co-founder of the Vorticist movement in art and edited ''BLAST,'' the literary magazine of the Vorticists. His novels include ''Tarr'' (1918) and ''The Human Age'' trilogy, composed of ''The Childermass'' (1928), ''Monstre Gai'' (1955) and ''Malign Fiesta'' (1955).
