Oteiza or Oteiza de la Solana (Oteitza in Basque), is a village and a Spanish municipality of the Foral Community of Navarra, located in the ''merindad'' of Estella, in the Estella Oriental region, 51 km from the capital of the community, Pamplona Pamplona (; eu, Iruña or ), historically also known as Pampeluna in English, is the capital city of the Chartered Community of Navarre, in Spain. Toponymy Formerly Basque was spoken in this municipality, hence its name "Oteitza" which is related to ''ote'' or ''ota'' which means ''argoma'', (heather) in Basque. Merindad
''Merindad'' () is a Mediaeval Spanish administrative term for a country subdivision smaller than a province but larger than a municipality. The officer in charge of a merindad was called a merino, roughly equivalent to the English ''count'' or ''bailiff''. It was used in the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre. Connected to the birth of Castile, the Merindades, standing for a northernmost ''comarca'' of the province of Burgos, was part of the creation of the administrative division by King Peter. Currently, the Foral Community of Navarre is still divided into five ''merindades'' standing for different judicial districts. The historic ''Merindad de Ultrapuertos'' lying to the north of the Pyrenees is nowadays Lower Navarre. Administratively, they have been substituted by the '' partido judicial''. Pamplona
Pamplona (; eu, Iruña or ), historically also known as Pampeluna in English, is the capital city of the Chartered Community of Navarre, in Spain. It is also the third-largest city in the greater Basque cultural region. Lying at near above sea level, the city (and the wider Cuenca de Pamplona) is located on the flood plain of the Arga river, a second-order tributary of the Ebro. Precipitation-wise, it is located in a transitional location between the rainy Atlantic northern façade of the Iberian Peninsula and its drier inland. Early population in the settlement traces back to the late Bronze to early Iron Age, even if the traditional inception date refers to the foundation of by Pompey during the Sertorian Wars circa 75 BCE.
