Mikkeli (; sv, S:t Michel; la, Michaelia) is a town and municipality in Finland. It is located in what used to be the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the Etelä-Savo region. Eastern Finland
Eastern Finland ( fi, Itä-Suomen lääni, sv, Östra Finlands län) was a province of Finland from 1997 to 2009. It bordered the provinces of Oulu, Western Finland and Southern Finland. Savonia Railway
The Savonian railway ( fi, Savon rata, sv, Savolaxbanan) is a 5 ft and 1520 mm gauge railways, 1,524 mm (5 ft) railway in Finland. Beginning in Kouvola railway station, Kouvola, it connects southern Finland with the eastern Regions of Finland, regions of South Savo and North Savo via the cities of Pieksämäki, Kuopio and Iisalmi. History Plans to build a railway through Savonia began in the 1870s. The alignment of the line was controversial and several different versions were proposed. Initially, the construction of a west–east line was proposed, but soon a south–north alignment was settled on. Various plans for the direction of the line included Taavetti–Mikkeli–Kangasniemi–Jyväskylä, Taavetti–Mikkeli–Varkaus–Kuopio and Kaipiainen–Mikkeli–Suonenjoki–Kuopio, among others.
