Otar Chkhartishvili
Otar Chkhartishvili ( ka, ოთარ ჩხარტიშვილი, russian: Отар Чхартишвили; born 1950) is a retired Georgian naval officer who served, successively, in the Soviet, Russian, and Georgian navies. His last appointment was as the commander of the Georgian navy from 1997 to 1998. Chkhartishvili, Captain 1st Rank, had a background with a 25-years service in the Soviet and Russian navies and had been a deputy chief of staff of a guided missile cruiser division in the Russian Northern Fleet by March 1997, when he was recruited by the government of Georgia and appointed to succeed Rear-Admiral Alexander Javakhishvili as the commander of the Georgian navy. In May 1998, the newly appointed Defense Minister David Tevzadze dismissed Chkhartishvili, accusing him of "financial irregularities" and "logistical incompetence". The Georgian Coast Guard ( ka, საქართველოს სანაპირო დაცვა) is the maritime arm of the Georgian Border Police, within the Ministry for Internal Affairs. It is responsible for the maritime protection of the entire coastline of Georgia, as well as the Georgian territorial waters. The primary missions of the service are administration of the territorial waters, marine pollution protection, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, port security and maritime defense. David Tevzadze ( ka, დავით თევზაძე) (born 30 January 1949) is a retired Georgian lieutenant general who was the country’s Minister of Defense from April 1998 to February 2004. Education and academic career Born in Sukhumi, Abkhaz ASSR, Georgian SSR, Tevzadze graduated from the Tbilisi State University (TSU) Faculty of Philosophy in 1971 and Institute of Foreign Languages in 1978. He then obtained Ph.D. at the Georgian Academy of Sciences Institute of Philosophy where he worked as a researcher and also lectured in history of philosophy and mathematical logic at the TSU for several years. Zurab Iremadze
Zurab "Gigla" Iremadze ( ka, ზურაბ იგლაირემაძე; 1960 – 13 August 2004) was a Georgian military commander who was involved in the Georgian Civil War in the early 1990s and then commanded the Georgian Navy from 1998 to 2004. He had the ranks of major general and vice admiral. Iremadze's career unfolded against the backdrop of the civil unrest in Georgia. He was one of the first officers of the National Guard, established in Georgia, then part of the crumbling Soviet Union, in 1990.
