Oswald Curtis
Oswald Curtis (1821 – 1 March 1902) was a 19th-century New Zealand politician born in London, England, on 20 January 1821. He was the son of Stephen Curtis and Eleanora Llewellyn. He migrated to Nelson, New Zealand, Nelson in 1853, arriving on 18 June. ''Mahomed Shah'' Curtis had been a passenger on the barque ''Mahomed Shah''. The ship sailed from England for New Zealand on 15 January 1853. On 18 April, about 400 miles south of Cape Leeuwin, the ship caught fire. All on board were rescued two days later by the brig ''The Ellen'' under Captain Pardon. The Ellen was sailing from Mauritius to Hobart. The ship's position was given as . Those rescued were taken to Hobart, arriving there on 6 May 1853. Nathaniel Edwards
Nathaniel Edwards MLC (1822 – 15 July 1880) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament from Nelson, New Zealand. Early life Nathaniel Edwards was born in 1822 in Derbyshire, England. His parents were solicitor William Edwards and his wife Mary Ann (née Allen). He arrived in Nelson in January 1845 on the ''Slams Castle'' from London, England. as partner in the firm of Nattrass and Edwards, along with machinery for a flax-dressing mill. This machinery was set up in the swamps of the Wakapuaka flats, but the experiments proved unsuccessful and ended in 1846. With this failure Edwards was thrown upon his own resources and he worked with surveyors Joseph Ward and Cyrus Goulter in the Wairau. He was still working as a surveyor on 13 September 1855 when he married in Nelson to 20-year-old Annie Augusta Nicholas Laking, daughter of Dr and Mrs Laking of Waimea West. They had 12 children. Albert Pitt
Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon Albert Pitt (1842 – 18 November 1906) was a 19th-century New Zealand politician, and a cabinet minister. In 1914, eight years after his death, The Albert Pitt Memorial Gates were erected in the Queen's Gardens, Nelson. Early life and profession Pitt was born in Hobart, Tasmania. His father, Captain Francis Pitt, was harbourmaster at Hobart. Pitt was educated in Tasmania. He studied law and started his professional career. In 1864 Pitt migrated to Nelson, starting his own law firm. He returned briefly to Hobart to marry Emma Bartlett, daughter of Edmund Bartlett, Launceston, Tasmania on 25 January 1866. On his return to Nelson, Pitt appeared as an advocate for the defendants in the Maungatapu murders case in mid-1866. In 1868 he entered into partnership with Henry Adams, trading as Adams and Pitt. William Acton Blakeway Adams (1843 – 24 January 1924), known as Acton Adams, was a 19th-century Member of Parliament from Nelson, New Zealand, Nelson, New Zealand. Early life Adams was born at Wilden Manor, Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, England, in 1843. The Adams family was descended from a William Adams who inherited the property of the supposed Knight Sturmy, an 11th-century Crusader. There is an element of doubt around who Sturmy was. An 1830 publication states the John Sturmy of Tenbury was not a Crusader. Adams was the oldest son of William Adams (New Zealand politician), William Adams, an English solicitor. His father, together with his family, migrated to Nelson on the ship ''Eden'' in 1850, acquired two runs in Wairau and became leader of the separation movement between Nelson and the Wairau.
