Ossie Bertram
Oswald Milne Bertram (17 April 1909 – 5 May 1983) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne and St Kilda in the VFL during the 1930s. Family The son of Frank Ernest Bertram, and Agnes Bertram, née Milne, he was born at Upper Sturt on 17 April 1909. He married Grace Mary Orme in 1940. Football Bertram was a rover and was recruited from South Australian National Football League club West Torrens, where he was a leading player who twice represented South Australia at interstate level. He joined South Melbourne for the 1933 season and helped them to win the premiership, kicking 28 goals for the year. Upper Sturt, South Australia
Upper Sturt is a suburb in the inner south of Adelaide, South Australia. The suburb is nestled in the lower reaches of the Mount Lofty Ranges with the Western Half located in the City of Mitcham local government area, and the eastern portion located in the Adelaide Hills Council Local Government Area. Before being gazetted with a place name, the area was often referred to on civil birth, death and marriage registrations as "near Government Farm", which later became Belair National Park. The Upper Sturt area had two stations on the Adelaide-Bridgewater railway line, which was constructed through the area in the late 1870s: Nalawort and Upper Sturt, both of which have closed and structures mostly removed. Upper Sturt Primary School was founded in 1879, and has approximately 41 students. Upper Sturt Post Office opened on 1 March 1881. Joe O'Meara
Daniel Joseph "Brum" O'Meara (16 September 1908 – 7 November 1985) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and South Melbourne in the VFL during the 1930s. Football O'Meara played as a centreman and half forward and debuted for South Melbourne in their premiership year of 1933, after being recruited from West Australia. John Bowe (14 July 1911 – 12 April 1990) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the VFL. He played on the wing in the club's 1933 Grand Final win over Richmond. The collection of players recruited from interstate in 1932/1933 became known as South Melbourne's "Foreign Legion". Bowe was recruited from Subiaco in the West Australian Football League The West Australian Football League (WAFL) is an Australian rules football league based in Perth, Western Australia. The league currently consists of ten teams, which play each other in a 20-round season usually lasting from March to September ... (WAFL) and returned to the club after playing for South Melbourne in 1933. He won Subiaco's best and fairest award in 1934.
