Osmanthus Alley
''Osmanthus Alley'' () is a 1987 Taiwanese drama film directed by Chen Kunhou. The film was selected as the Taiwanese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 60th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. Plot Set in early 1900s, young Ti-Hung (Lu Hsiao-Fen) and her younger brother, Ti-Jiang became orphaned when their mother died. Being the elder sibling, Ti-Hung took care of her younger brother while being under the charge of their aunt and uncle. Years passed and Ti-Hung has grown up to be a pretty young lady with excellent embroidery skills and tiny bound feet. Her feet and embroidery works got noticed by a wealthy old matriarch, Lady Li of North Gate, who offered her only grandson, Rui Yu's (Wakin Chau), hand in marriage to Ti-Hung. A fellow villager and poor fisherman, Ah Hai ( Simon Yam), who is also a friend of Ti-jiang, is fond of Ti-Hung. Chen Kunhou
Chen Kun-hou (born 25 July 1939 in Taichū, Japanese Formosa) is a Taiwanese film director and cinematographer. He is known for his film '' Growing Up'' (1983), one of the films that initiated the Taiwan New Cinema movement. Chen was also the cinematographer for several of fellow director Hou Hsiao-hsien's earlier films. The Republic of China (Taiwan) has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1957, and regularly since 1980. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. For the purposes of Oscar submissions, AMPAS recognizes Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong as separate entities, and each one regularly submits a film to the competition. This is a list of submissions to the 60th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. The dowry system in India refers to the durable goods, cash, and real or movable property that the bride's family gives to the groom, his parents and his relatives as a condition of the marriage. Dowry is referred to dahez in Hindi and as ''jahez'' in Urdu. The dowry system can put great financial burden on the bride's family. Opium (or poppy tears, scientific name: ''Lachryma papaveris'') is dried latex obtained from the seed capsules of the opium poppy ''Papaver somniferum''. Approximately 12 percent of opium is made up of the analgesic alkaloid morphine, which is processed chemically to produce heroin and other synthetic opioids for medicinal use and for the illegal drug trade.
