Oskar Hirsch
Oskar Hirsch (November 14, 1877 - April 20, 1965) was a Viennese otolaryngologist. In 1910, Hirsch described his classic transsphenoidal surgery technique for pituitary gland surgery. Transsphenoidal Surgery
Transsphenoidal surgery is a type of surgery in which an endoscope or surgical instruments are inserted into part of the brain by going through the nose and the sphenoid bone (a butterfly-shaped bone forming the anterior inferior portion of the brain case) into the sphenoidal sinus cavity. Transsphenoidal surgery is used to remove tumors of the pituitary gland. (Such tumours, although within the skull, are outside the brain itself). History The transsphenoidal approach was first attempted by Hermann Schloffer in 1907. Use of the procedure grew in the 1950s and 60s with the introduction of intraoperative fluoroscopy and operating microscope. Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery
Endoscopic endonasal surgery is a minimally invasive technique used mainly in neurosurgery and otolaryngology. A neurosurgeon or an otolaryngologist, using an endoscope that is entered through the nose, fixes or removes brain defects or tumors in the anterior skull base. Normally an otolaryngologist performs the initial stage of surgery through the nasal cavity and sphenoid bone; a neurosurgeon performs the rest of the surgery involving drilling into any cavities containing a neural organ such as the pituitary gland. Adam Rainer (1899– 4 March 1950) was the only person in recorded history to have been both a dwarf and a giant. He is believed to have had acromegaly. Dwarfism is a condition wherein an organism is exceptionally small, and mostly occurs in the animal kingdom. Gigantism
Gigantism ( el, γίγας, ''gígas'', "giant", plural γίγαντες, ''gígantes''), also known as giantism, is a condition characterized by excessive growth and height significantly above average. In humans, this condition is caused by over-production of growth hormone in childhood, resulting in people up to in height. It is a rare disorder resulting from increased levels of growth hormone before the fusion of the growth plate which usually occurs at some point soon after puberty. This increase is most often due to abnormal tumor growths on the pituitary gland. Gigantism should not be confused with acromegaly, the adult form of the disorder, characterized by somatic enlargement specifically in the extremities and face.
