Oshkosh West High School
Oshkosh West High School is a public high school in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and part of the Oshkosh Area School District. As of 2019, the school has 1,691 students in grades 9 through 12. Originally known as Oshkosh High School when the building was opened in 1961, its name was changed when Oshkosh North High School was built in 1972. The facility holds a swimming pool and two gyms, as well as the Alberta Kimball Auditorium. Extracurricular activities As of the 2018–2019 school year, Oshkosh West has 53 student clubs and 23 sports, 11 for males and 12 for females, all participating in the Fox Valley Association. The Oshkosh West Boys Basketball team was undefeated in 2006 and 2007, and won the state Division 1 championship both years. Oshkosh is a city in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, of which it is the county seat. The city had a population of 66,816 in 2020, making it the ninth-largest city in Wisconsin. It is also adjacent to the Town of Oshkosh. History Oshkosh was named for Menominee Chief Oshkosh, whose name meant "claw" (cf. Ojibwe ''oshkanzh'', "the claw"). Oshkosh Area School District is a school district located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It has about 10,000 students and operates 13 elementary schools, five middle schools, two high schools, and three charter schools. The district is governed by a seven-person Board of Education which is elected at large for three-year terms, as well as a superintendent of schools. Oshkosh North High School is a public secondary/high school located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Part of the Oshkosh Area School District, the school serves students in grades 9 through 12. As of 2021, there are 1,193 students enrolled at the school. It is referred to by students as "North". The facility holds an in-house TV studio, swimming pool, field house with Weight Room, and an auditorium. The school was built in 1972 as a second high school for the city, when the Oshkosh West High School, formerly known as Oshkosh High School, facilities became too small to support the growing number for students. The school first opened as an open-concept school, with modular walls between classrooms, and multiple classes taking place in one room at the same time. Fox Valley Association
The Fox Valley Association is an athletic conference comprising ten high schools located within the Fox Valley region of northeastern Wisconsin. The management of the conference is vested in the principals of the member schools, who determine the rules governing the eligibility of athletes and the schedules. Rules and regulations may not be less restrictive than those of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association. History The Conference was formed in 1970 when the Appleton Area teams split from the Fox River Valley Conference teams and joined up with the suburban Fox Valley teams. "On, Wisconsin!" is the fight song of the Wisconsin Badgers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. A version with modified lyrics is the official state song of Wisconsin. "On, Wisconsin!" was also the cry that Arthur MacArthur Jr. used in the Battle of Chattanooga at Missionary Ridge, in the Civil War. History The tune was composed in 1909 by William T. Purdy as "Minnesota, Minnesota," with the intention of entering it into a competition for a new fight song at the University of Minnesota. Carl Beck, a former Wisconsin student, convinced him to withdraw it from the contest at the last minute and allow his alma mater to use it instead.
