Ortoire (archaeological Site)
Ortoire, in Trinidad, is the archaeological type site for the Ortoiroid people, immigrants to the Antilles around 2000 BCE. It is a shell midden site in southeast Trinidad. Saunders, Nicholas J''The Peoples of the Caribbean: an Encyclopedia of Archeology and Traditional Culture.''ABC-CLIO, 2005. . The site is actually made up of five small sites located along a small strip of land between the ocean and a mangrove swamp which were excavated in 1953 by Irving Rouse. Rouse found manos, flattened mano-pestles made from Antillean stone, a grinding stone, bone points and fish and animal remains. Also excavated were quartz and chert chips and red ochre pebbles. The site was dated to 800 BCE. The Ortoiroid peoples, migrants who reached Antigua Island by canoe from modern Venezuela, probably around 5,000 BCE, are named after the Ortoire site. Ortoire is a village in Mayaro County on Trinidad Island. It is named after the adjacent Ortoire River. The village dates to at least the 1880s or a few decades earlier. Ortoire is just west of the peninsula of Point Radix, named after a French immigrant granted an estate there in 1783. The village's beach at the mouth of the river provides shelter to ocean-going fishing boats. The village was not listed in the 1901 census, but was believed to have "a few hundred people" then. Ortoire River
The Ortoire River is a river in Trinidad and Tobago. It forms the boundary between Nariva County and Mayaro County in east Trinidad. At over in length, it is one of Trinidad's longest rivers and is navigable by very small crafts for at least a third of its length from its mouth at the Atlantic coast near Point Radix and the village of Ortoire. Victoria was a county on Trinidad island in Trinidad and Tobago. The county of Victoria was named in honour of Queen Victoria during the colonial British Trinidad and Tobago period.
