Ortlieb (Germanic Heroic Legend)
Ortlieb is the son of Kriemhild (Gudrun) and Etzel (Atli) and a minor figure in Germanic heroic legend and literature. He is definitively named in the ''Nibelungenlied''. Here, he is decapitated by Hagen, after the latter hears of Bloedelin's attack on the Burgundians, which Kriemhild had urged him to undertake. After Kriemhild decapitates her own brother Gunther, Hagen is in turn decapitated by Kriemhild after she forces him to reveal the location of the hoard of the Nibelungen. In the ''Þiðreks saga'', he is likewise killed by Hagen (Högni) in the hall, after he provokes him following the counsel of his mother. This causes a fierce fight to erupt. Kriemhild (Grimhild) is then killed after an enraged Thidrek sees her checking if her brothers are dead by sticking pieces of flaming wood into their mouths. Hagen () is the 41st-largest city in Germany. The municipality is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Dietrich von Bern is the name of a character in Germanic heroic legend who originated as a legendary version of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great. The name "Dietrich", meaning "Ruler of the People", is a form of the Germanic name "Theodoric". In the legends, Dietrich is a king ruling from Verona (Bern) who was forced into exile with the Huns under Etzel by his evil uncle Ermenrich. The differences between the known life of Theodoric and the picture of Dietrich in the surviving legends are usually attributed to a long-standing oral tradition that continued into the sixteenth century. Guðrúnarkviða II
''Guðrúnarkviða II'', ''The Second Lay of Gudrún'', or ''Guðrúnarkviða hin forna'', ''The Old Lay of Gudrún'' is probably the oldest poem of the Sigurd cycle, according to Henry Adams Bellows. The poem was composed before the year 1000 and Bellows considered it to be in a "rather bad shape", but it was in that shape that it provided material for the ''Völsunga saga'', where it was faithfully paraphrased. He states, however, that it is the only Old Norse poem from an earlier period than the year 1000 in the Sigurd tradition that has come down to modern times in a roughly complete form. The other older poems, '' Reginsmál'', ''Fáfnismál'' and '' Sigrdrifumál'', are collections of fragments and only the last part of '' Brot af Sigurðarkviðu'' remains. Atlamál Hin Groenlenzku
''Atlamál in grǿnlenzku'' (''The Greenlandic Lay of Atli'') is one of the heroic poems of the ''Poetic Edda''. It relates the same basic story as ''Atlakviða'' at greater length and in a different style. The poem is believed to have been composed in Greenland, most likely in the 12th century. It has 103 stanzas and is the only Eddic poem written entirely in the metre málaháttr. Plot Plotting to kill his brothers-in-law, Atli dispatches messengers to Gunnarr and Högni, the sons of Gjúki, with an invitation to his hall. Guðrún daughter of Gjúki, Atli's wife, learns about the plot and sends a runic message to her brothers but the runes are corrupted by one of the messengers, Vingi. Nevertheless, Kostbera, Högni's wife, discerns from the runes that something is wrong and warns Högni. Atlakviða
''Atlakviða'' (''The Lay of Atli'') is one of the heroic poems of the ''Poetic Edda''. One of the main characters is Atli who originates from Attila the Hun. It is one of the most archaic Eddic poems, possibly dating to as early as the 9th century. Owing to its stylistic similarity to ''Hrafnsmál'' it has been suggested that the poem might have been composed by Þorbjörn Hornklofi.Genzmer, Felix. 1926. ‘Der Dichter der Atlakviða’. The ''Poetic Edda'' is the modern name for an untitled collection of Old Norse anonymous narrative poems, which is distinct from the ''Prose Edda'' written by Snorri Sturluson. Gudrun ( ; non, Guðrún) or Kriemhild ( ; gmh, Kriemhilt) is the wife of Sigurd/Siegfried and a major figure in Germanic heroic legend and literature. She is believed to have her origins in Ildico, last wife of Attila the Hun, and two queens of the Merovingian dynasty, Brunhilda of Austrasia and Fredegund.
