Ormsby is a surname. The name originates from people of the Southern areas of Scandinavia who would later migrate to Wales & England. In Old Norse the surname is translated to mean either "Home Of Serpents" or "Land Of Dragons", in Old English the name translates to "By The Orm" or in Welsh "By The Elm". The origins of the name date back to the tales of the Viking, Orm, around the year 1050. Orm became famous during a particular raid on Scotland. Before the raiding party had left the Jarl had declared that the first man to set foot on Scottish soil would have first claim to the land. As the Vikings neared the Scottish coast, they were intercepted by the natives & a sea battle ensued. During the battle, Orm's leg was severed from his body. This did not stop him from fighting though, & as the days battle came to an end, the Vikings were victorious & made their way towards the coast. Alan Ormsby
Alan Ormsby (born December 14, 1943) is an American director, screenwriter, make up artist, actor and author. Film career Ormsby began work in feature films with the Bob Clark-directed ''Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things'' (1972), which co-starred his then-wife Anya Ormsby. In addition to writing the film's script, Ormsby played the lead, Alan, and provided the film's make-up effects. Two years later, Ormsby and Clark re-teamed on ''Deathdream''. ''Deranged'', a horror film inspired by serial killer Ed Gein, saw Clark producing with Ormsby writing and co-directing the feature (with Jeff Gillen), while ''Deathdream'' saw Clark directing another Ormsby script. In 1980s Ormsby continued as a screenwriter, writing the screenplays for ''My Bodyguard'' (1980), ''The Little Dragons'' (1980), Paul Schrader's '' Cat People'' (1982) and Clark's '' Porky's II: The Next Day'' (1983). Brendan Ormsby
Brendon Thomas Christopher Ormsby (born 1 October 1960) is an English former professional footballer. A centre back, Ormsby played for Aston Villa, Leeds United, Shrewsbury, Doncaster, Waterford United, Scarborough and Wigan. Ormsby led Leeds to the FA Cup semi-final and Division Two play-offs in 1986–87. He worked as a postman in Leeds Moortown after retiring from football. During his later years he has worked as a coach at Senior and Junior levels, including a spell working with Lawnswood Lasers JFC. Ormsby is also the honorary president of the Scarborough Branch of the Leeds United Member's Club. Eric Ormsby
Eric Linn Ormsby (born 1941 in Atlanta, Georgia) is deputy head of academic research and publications at the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London. He was formerly a professor at McGill University Institute of Islamic Studies, where he also served as director. He has published widely on Islamic thought, including ''Theodicy in Islamic Thought'' (1984). Frank Ormsby
Francis Arthur Ormsby (born 1947) is a Northern Irish author and poet. Life Frank Ormsby was born in Irvinestown, County Fermanagh. He was educated at St Michael's College, Enniskillen and then Queen's University Belfast. From 1976 until his retirement in 2010, he was Head of English at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. Work Over a period of fifty years he has published ten books of poetry and has also edited another ten collections. From 1969 to 1989 he was editor of ''The Honest Ulsterman''. He has also edited the ''Poetry Ireland Review''. Hilda Ormsby
Hilda Ormsby born Hilda Rodwell Jones (1 November 1877 – 23 October 1973) was a British academic and geographer. Life Ormsby was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1877. Her father was a minister and the family moved around the country frequently when she was growing up. Despite this she took a certificate in Geography in the organisation that would be very important to her - the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). After this she moved to France where she studied French and German and minor subjects at the École Normale de Melun. In 1911 she and brother, Llewellyn, discovered the lectures given by the LSE geographer Halford Mackinder on Saturday mornings for school teachers. She became an geography demonstrator in the following year and did sound work there during World War One whilst lecturing and studying. Kristian Ormsby
Kristian Ormsby (born 12 April 1980 in Auckland, New Zealand) is a former New Zealand rugby union player. In his rugby career he played for Counties-Manukau, the Hurricanes, the Chiefs and the New Zealand Maori. His usual position is at lock, though he is known for playing in the loose forward positions of Blindside Flanker and Number Eight. Ormsby made his Super Rugby debut in 2001 after an outstanding season for the provincial Counties-Manukau team. In 2003 he joined the Wellington Hurricanes rugby franchise, for whom he played over 30 matches before returning to his roots and once again playing for his original team, the Chiefs. George Ralph Charles Ormsby-Gore, 3rd Baron Harlech, (21 January 1855 – 8 May 1938), was a British soldier and Conservative Member of Parliament. Oliver Ormsby (February 25, 1767 – July 26, 1832) was a businessman in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a wealthy and influential leader in the city, and the borough of Mount Oliver, Pennsylvania, is named in his honor. Career After his father died in 1805, Oliver continued his father's trading business in north-western Pennsylvania, and expanded it to new locations at Erie, Pennsylvania, and Niagara, New York. Stephen Ormsby (1759March 4, 1844) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky. He was born in County Sligo, Ireland, immigrated to the United States when a boy, and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He pursued classical studies and studied law. Ormsby was admitted to the bar in 1786 and commenced the practice of his profession in Danville, Kentucky. He became Deputy Attorney General of Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1787.
