Ormond Simkins
Ormond Simkins (May 16, 1879 – December 4, 1921) was an American football and baseball player for the Sewanee Tigers of Sewanee: The University of the South. He was the son of William Stewart Simkins, who may have fired the first shot of the American Civil War. Early years Ormond was born on May 16, 1879 in Corsicana, Texas to William Stewart Simkins and Elizabeth Ware. Sewanee Ormond entered Sewanee in 1896 as a law student. He was valedictorian of the 1900 class. Baseball On the baseball team he was the catcher and when captain of the team in 1901, moved to shortstop. Football Simkins was an All-Southern fullback and punter of the Sewanee Tigers football team from 1896 to 1901. A stained glass window at Sewanee depicts Simkins handing a football to Henry D. Corsicana, Texas
Corsicana is a city in Navarro County, Texas, United States. It is located on Interstate 45, 56 miles northeast of Waco, Texas. The population was 23,770 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Navarro County, and an important Agri-business center. History Founded in 1848, Corsicana was named by José Antonio Navarro after the Mediterranean island of Corsica, the birthplace of his father. He had died when Navarro and his many siblings were young. The first school opened shortly afterwards in 1849. Women's groups have had a strong role throughout the history of the city. They established the Corsicana Female Literary Institute, a school that operated from 1857 through 1870. Catcher is a Baseball positions, position in baseball and softball. Billy Suter
Herman Milton "Billy" Suter (December 10, 1874 – October 31, 1946) was an American football and baseball player, coach, referee, and athletic director. He was also a newspaper publisher. Early life Suter was born on December 10, 1874 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania to Henry Suter. Henry was from Sutersville, Pennsylvania and died in 1883. College Suter was initiated into Pennsylvania Alpha in 1893 until 1897. Suter played for Washington & Jefferson Presidents football, Washington & Jefferson, and the 1894 Penn State football team. Princeton He later enrolled at Princeton University. In 1895, as a member of the Princeton Tigers football team he once ran for a 95-yard touchdown against Harvard Crimson football, Harvard. John Heisman
John William Heisman (October 23, 1869 – October 3, 1936) was a player and coach of American football, baseball, and basketball, as well as a sportswriter and actor. He served as the head football coach at Oberlin College, Buchtel College (now known as the University of Akron), Auburn University, Clemson University, Georgia Tech, the University of Pennsylvania, Washington & Jefferson College, and Rice University, compiling a career college football record of 186–70–18. Heisman was also the head basketball coach at Georgia Tech, tallying a mark of 9–14, and the head baseball coach at Buchtel, Clemson, and Georgia Tech, amassing a career college baseball record of 199–108–7. 1899 Auburn Tigers Football Team
The 1899 Auburn Tigers football team represented Auburn University in the 1899 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. The Tigers went 3–1–1, outscoring their opponents 148–11 and holding four opponents scoreless. This team was noteworthy as the last to be coached by Tigers head coach John Heisman. It is also one of the first teams to employ a Hurry-up offense. As Heisman recalled: In Heisman's opinion this was his best team while at Auburn. Lorenzo Ferguson "Fuzzy" Woodruff (May 27, 1884 – December 7, 1929) was an early 20th-century American sportswriter known throughout most of the southeast for his vivid writing. He was also a music and drama critic. He began his newspaper career as a member of the ''Montgomery Advertiser'' in 1907. 1899 Sewanee Tigers Football Team
The 1899 Sewanee Tigers football team represented Sewanee: The University of the South in the 1899 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. Sewanee was one of the first college football powers of the South and the 1899 team was one of its best. The 1899 Tigers won 12 games and lost none, outscored opponents 322–10, and won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) title. The team of 21 players was led by head coach Herman "Billy" Suter and future College Football Hall of Famer and captain Henry "Ditty" Seibels. The team also featured Ormond Simkins, and the team's manager was future US Senator and newspaper publisher Luke Lea. The 11 extra points against by Bart Sims is still a school record. John Heisman's Auburn team was the only team to score on Sewanee. The 1901 Sewanee Tigers football team was an American football team that represented the Sewanee Tigers of Sewanee: The University of the South as an independent during the 1901 college football season. In its third season under head coach Billy Suter, the team compiled a 4–2–2 record. Sewanee was a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association during the majority of the 1901 season. However, the association indefinitely suspended Sewanee on November 26, 1901, for allowing an ineligible player to participate in the November 16 game against Vanderbilt.
